George Chuvalo In his boxing career, he was never knocked down and Muhammad Ali called him the toughest man he ever fought. In 93 fights, he had 73 wins, 64 by KO. He has received the Order of Canada and a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.
Andre De Grasse As a sprinter, he has won two gold, two silver and three bronze at the Olympics. He is also a World Champion in the 4x100m relay. He is the first Canadian sprinter to win three medals in a single Olympics. He has received the Order of Canada.

George Stroumboulopoulos As one of Canada's most popular media personalities, he hosted George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight from 2005 to 2014, and anchored Hockey Night in Canada from 2014 to 2016. He has won several Geminis, has two honorary degrees and the Order of Canada.
Gord Downie The lead singer and lyricist of The Tragically Hip from 1984 to his death in 2017, he released 13 albums with the band. He also released eight solo albums, three posthumously. He received the Order of Canada and was twice CP's Canadian Newsmaker of the Year.

Ruth never forgot Matthias. He bought him not one, but two Cadillacs, during his Major League career. He also always gave time and money to St. Mary's whenever Matthias asked. Brother Matthias passed away in 1944 at the age of 72. Ruth died four years later. 📸 SABR 🧵 7/8
Ruth spent 12 years at St. Mary's, and played baseball every single day. Matthias also brought Ruth to the notice of Jack Dunn, a scout for the minor league Baltimore Orioles, beginning Ruth's professional career that lasted into the 1930s on his way to the Hall of Fame. 📸 SABR 🧵 6/8
Ruth based his playing on Matthias. He copied the uppercut swing of Matthias, which helped him revolutionize baseball with his homerun hitting. Matthias also ran the bases using short strides. Ruth used this type of running throughout his entire career. 📸 Wikicommons 🧵 5/8
Brother Matthias saw that Ruth had raw talent. Ruth, for his part, revered Matthias. He said later in life he was the greatest man he ever knew, and the father that he needed. Matthias taught Ruth to read and write, and gave him the structure he needed. 📸 Wikicommons 🧵 4/8
Brother Matthias was born in Cape Breton in 1872. Standing at six-foot-six, he loved baseball and took that passion for the sport to St. Mary's. Ruth stated that the day he was born as a hitter was when he saw Matthias hit a baseball 350 feet over a centerfield fence. 📸 SABR 🧵 3/8
As a child, Babe Ruth was a bit wild. This led to him being sent to the St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore. It was at this reform school that Babe Ruth's life changed and he discovered baseball. It was thanks to a priest there named Brother Matthias. 📸 Wikicommons 🧵 2/8

On this day in 1867, Francis Rattenbury was born. He designed buildings including BC's legislative building and the Empress Hotel. He was murdered by his wife's lover in 1935.
