One fun thing about being in the faculty union is you get to hear what administration tells the STEM faculty and what they tell the humanities faculty. Turns out we're both too expensive and costing the university money and can't be afforded. Just for completely opposite and contradictory reasons.

Amazing that Liz Truss has become international shorthand for total incompetence, a lasting global legacy across generations beyond any British Prime Minister since Churchill.

The crisis in post-16 education is being raised in Parliament.

The UCU Parliamentary Group has tabled a motion demanding urgent action on job cuts, pay and funding, and backing striking UCU members.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…

Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

I recently found out that my latest novel has been chosen by The Bookseller magazine as paperback of the year for 2026.

To say it had an inauspicious start in life would be putting things mildly… tomcox.substack.com/p/how-a-nove...

Addendum @zkadodz.bsky.social spotted a post in local FB group (thanks!) asking after me, so I was able to connect online and thank this guy. Hoping our paths cross again under better circumstances in future. 🤞

So now the top of my humerus bone is in 3 pieces... Somehow I've gotten to this stage of life without ever breaking a bone before. What should I expect? Hints, tips on managing with this kind of injury v welcome indeed

Close up of an x-ray of a shoulder joint. The 'ball' part of the humerus (long arm bone)is sheared away from the main stick part, and a further shard of bone is floating free of the main ball. Find myself both fascinated and mildly nauseated by this image; also think its amazing that X-rays are now so high res, available so quickly. Digital medical imaging is awesome!

Cycling into work Mon morning, I came off my bike, fell badly and landed on my shoulder in the middle of the road. Dazed and confused, a passerby picked me & bike up, helped me get to NHS walk-in, lock bike safe, insisted on staying until medics saw me, must have taken ages. Wonderful human being ❤️

A solid cooking rule to follow is to remember that when recipes say "add two cloves of garlic" is is always a misprint and what they actually mean is six.

It is almost a consortia of food editors? writers? who hate seasoning. Who puts just one clove, or two in anything? It's why that head gives you many cloves.

I’m blessed to be in many public health, medicine & science “group chats” & wow has there been an outpouring of deep sadness today. Helen was a one-off. We’ve been sharing anecdotes of how awesome it was to be interviewed by her. This mass outpouring & the reminiscences signal a life well lived. RIP

I worked with—and deeply admired—Helen for almost 30 years. She was hands down *the best source* about emerging infectious diseases that I've ever known. My first warning of COVID was when on Dec 28, 2019 she reposted a ProMED mail report of an atypical pneumonia cluster: "This doesn't look good."

Helen Branswell was one of the greatest health journalists on the planet; she will be missed In April 2020, Duke Today interviewed me about where I was turning to for reliable information about COVID. This is what I said.

" I read everything by Helen Branswell, global health reporter for STAT. Her reporting on COVID-19, from when the pandemic began, has been the finest to date."
