Both Jessie and Annie survived on Lifeboat No. 11, while Harper died in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic along with around 1,500 others.
In 1921, the church he'd founded on Craigiehall Street was renamed the Harper Memorial Baptist Church in his honour.
John Harper was on the maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Titanic, along with his 31 year old niece Jessie Leitch and his six year old daughter Annie, when it struck an iceberg just before midnight the 14th of April 1912, some 370 miles to the southeast of Newfoundland. Cont./

Basically, yes, but at the posher end of what a semi-detached would be. It distinguishes them from terraced townhouses. 👍🙂
Four of the twenty-four sculpted corbel figures on William Whyte's 1886 French Rebaissance style tenements on Queen's Drive in Glasgow. These four are thought to represent the seasons (spring and summer on the top and winter and autumn underneath).
A double villa on the corner of Kelvinside Terrace West and Wilton Street in the North Kelvinside area of Glasgow. Built around 1860, it's described as Thomsonesque, and is a beautiful little building.

Don't mention the F word in Glasgow! 😀
👍🙂
Good morning, Glasgow. There was a brief, but rather beautiful sunrise over the city this morning, with the clouds on the eastern horizon lit from below. Unfortunately, the effect only lasted about ten minutes before it faded back into autumnal greyness.
However, the spire at the top of the tower wasn't completed until the 1890s. By this time, Gilbert Scott had died and the work was completed by his son, John Oldrid Scott.

The main buildings of Glasgow University in yesterday's occasional sunshine. Primarily designed by George Gilbert Scott, the University moved to this building in 1870.

There's a couple of examples of iron kerbs in the back lanes of Glasgow, but they're certainly not common! 👍🙂
I think it's pretty much out now. 👍🙂
It's a temporary one set up (along with other rides) for the half-term holidays and the run up to Hallowe'en. 👍🙂
Looking down the Clyde from the Riverside Museum at sunset this evening.
It's now as much a sign of acceptance of a statue as an insult. In fact, I'm not too sure there's any evidence it was ever meant an an insult, rather than a drunken challenge.
The monumental Scottish Provident Institution Building on St Vincent Place in central Glasgow. Constructed in 1904 in a French Renaissance style that would be just as much at home in Paris as it is in Scotland's largest city, it was designed by J. M. Dick Peddie.
Well, that didn't take very long ...
This is just one of many such sites within a short distance of Glasgow, making it the perfect base for exploring some of the less well-known events Scotland's history.
