I guess I have @haydendonnell.bsky.social to thank for this

@mehr.nzOct 12, 2026, 8:19 PM

in language acquisition lecture something I do is grab the day's most trending headline and record myself reading it aloud, as a demo of the acoustic complexity of word segmentation in newly uttered speech this was today's trending headline so, uh, I guess that's what I'm reading aloud to the class

Headline "kiwibank mascot appears in us talk show as sexualisé tweets go viral" with a waveform below it

Scientist: no but when I asked an LLM it got it wrong too

@mehr.nzOct 12, 2026, 1:54 AM

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your CV? Scientist: I made it in TeX and can't figure out how to remove the gap but I also don't want to get yelled at if I post a question on stackexchange, so I have instead decided to appreciate the gap, which is still there

Fans of MAD MEN will recall that this mishap leads to a good idea for advertising telegrams ("you can't frame a phone call") but I shan't be so lucky with my own failure of documentation

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 11:27 PM

last night I had a thought for something to put in this chapter, scribbled a note, and looking now I found it is completely indecipherable. i have no clue what it was. my thought is gone forever let this, and Kinsey from MAD MEN be a reminder to you all: when you have a good idea *write it down*

i just spent 5 min trying to download a paper through the Official Library Website before giving up and getting it instantly (and illicitly) on sci-hub instead

annals of book research, vol. 12, comparative psych edition in land-dwelling vertebrates, the animal holds still and the sound shakes the ear. in water-dwelling animals, the ear holds still while the sounds shake the fish

The Goldfish Ear Codes the Axis of Acoustic
Particle Motion in Three Dimensions
Abstract. Auditory and vestibular nerve fibers of the goldfish are strongly
directionally sensitive to whole-body acceleration at audio frequencies. The threedimensional pattern of sensitivity shows that input from a receptor ensemble (hair
cells) is essentially equivalent to that expectedfrom a single hair cell having a given
three-dimensional orientation of best sensitivity. Fibers from the sacculus, lagena,
and utriculus differ with respect to distributions of directional orientation, but are
similar in best threshold (less than 1 nanometer, root mean square, at '140 hertz). In
combination with other mechanisms for detection ofsound pressure, this directionality is a likely basis for directional hearing in fishes, and it could allow the determination of underwater acoustic intensity.

Lol no just a gdoc, I like my recipes simpler than my scientific documents

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 6:31 PM

Will be keen to try when it's ready. In general though I've found we don't tend to work on docs at exactly the same time (maybe because of geographic spread) so have been pretty happy without a real-time collaborative editor

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 5:56 PM

Nice! We used to use latexdiffr but in qmd that won't work (using typst), so will try this....

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 5:25 PM

We've found gh comments a bit unwieldy but it's certainly an option

48. SHORT TALKS (Anne Carson). This is one of Carson's early books of poetry, or maybe better to call them vignettes, or short talks since that's what she called them For me, reading this was a bit like walking through a well-curated gallery without knowing much about the painters

Only a financial journalist would look at academic publishing and think "what that sector needs is more mergers and private equity" to deal with the mess that financialisation has caused.
giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Mergers could help by creating savings that offset the increased costs of quality control. The industry’s biggest four groups account for two-fifths of articles published. That leaves plenty of scope to roll up the unwieldy long tail that includes university publishers and professional organisations such as IEEE. There have been a few smaller transactions so far, such as Wiley’s £337mn acquisition of Emerald Publishing in June. But Informa’s decision earlier this week to separate Taylor & Francis from its live events business may give dealmakers a boost.

Private equity can help, having already dipped a toe into the sector: Springer Nature was previously owned by companies including EQT and BC Partners. And the financials still look attractive.

When is bsky making private accounts lolol

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 6:35 AM

i just lol'd

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 6:34 AM

hahahah totally fair as my late father-in-law would say, de gustibus non est disputandum

@mehr.nzOct 11, 2026, 6:31 AM

I think what I don't like about the Oxford series is that it almost seems intentionally lacking style. The Kittel physics ones are very simple and minimalist but I find them stylish (the colours vary from edition to edition; the typefaces are carefully chosen; etc)
