Starting with this brown ochre, cos I was talking about PBr7 y'day + I haven't tried thissun yet. Also making binder ont fly, since I'm trying out gum arabic from a new supplier. If you've been following a while: this ochre is from when a pal said 'u gotta go to my daughter's place & see her mud'…

Measuring cups and spoons filled with gum arabic solution, syrup, and vegetable glycerine, next to a pile of brown pigment powder.

…or beach brick, coal, clay, etc. Most of these don't make it into my shop, cos I only have small amounts (my shale mud being the notable exception.) But given I've raised a good amount of £s for AKT & Medical Aid for Palestinians with small paint sets? Let's see if I can do the same for RNLI…

Jars of homemade pigment sitting on my glass paintmaking plate. There's a big jar of ground shale, and many smaller jars of ochres, marls, and beach brick and tile pigments. There's some vials filled with pigment made by Kerrie Owens and Polbens, made from ground found seashells. There's also some sea-coal and minerals from Kerrie too.

So… I got inspired by rage & safety concerns.

I'm making a paint set today, & taking you with me.

I make a bunch of pigments from beach material (see caveats on risks/permissions here: mothsinahumansuit.uk/2024/09/30/p...)

I also have pigments from other makers, made from beachcombed shells or...

It's very satisfying to mull too, just made a big batch so I can put some in my shop at some point!

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 8:01 PM

Ahh I do like a good Payne's grey!

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:37 PM

Fair point! 😂 Ochres are never only one thing. Most I use pigment that I made from a friend's clay (they have iron-rich soil where they live.) Also Jackson's sell a brown ochre pigment (it's french I think) that I really like.

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:34 PM

I have no idea how to explain it, but it always seems to be the right brown. Like for dried leaves, bugs, twigs nests, toning down reds, making green a bit more olive-y... I mean it could just be me, but it seems to fit everything? 🤷 Siena is often a lil too red-orange, & umbers too much t'other way

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:29 PM

Yet somehow I don't see that much of it around the place. And also for some batshit reason I've never put mine in my shop, so I should change that ASAP 🤦

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:27 PM

I mean sienas and umbers are good too, obvs. But I think I use brown ochre way more often.

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:27 PM

Brown ochre PBr7 is an underrated pigment, fight me.

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:44 PM

I mean... I keep saying I don't need more pigments, but here we are 🤷 😂

Heads up! My October shop update is up at lycomorpha.etsy.com, & here is this month's colour (it's a crunchy one :)

A granulating grey watercolour paint. Three open pans sit on a postcard swatch, with lines, blocks, and circles of colour showing how the paint looks at different dilutions with water. This paint contains grey slate PBk19, green earth PG23, and mars black PBk11

Anyone know any support groups for folks who have friends / family detained by ICE in WA area? — I’m familiar with all of the socal groups since all of my family is there, but we need some WA resources

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 9:23 PM

Aww thanks! I wish I had more time to work on this every day, it's such a joy to get to draw all the fiddly stuff 😁

@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:27 PM

Thirdlyly, cos life keeps getting in the bloody way, I didn't get to the drawing board much this week. & I'm anxious. I need to practice so I don't fuck the big drawing up 😬 So I picked up an old sketch from when I 1st had this fade/cut-out idea, but never had time to finish. Practicing my deets…

A different drawing of a different species of dry leaf or bark mimicking moth. Well, it's a sketch TBH. Anyway it's a wide, flat, geometer moth called a waved umber. Its wings are patterned with horizontal stripes in different shades of brown. I'm using this to practice details on moth wings.
@lycomorpha.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 12:04 PM

Ok so firstly I realised I forgot to put the last pics of the shading here, even tho that is what this thread is for 🤦. Secondly, we have entered detail territory. Which is both exciting and also fucking terrifying... Because that's how art works I guess! 🤷 😂...

More shading happening on the moth drawing in this thread. This time the pic is zoomed out, showing my hand in a galaxy pattern compression glove shading dry leaves around the central moth.Adding some fine sepia lines to the moth's wing to highlight the edges.A bit more of the shading on the uppermost moth wings.
