Newsom rejecting the billionaire wealth tax is one thing. Supporting the billionaires' poison pill alternative which would ban taxes on assets permanently, end any chance to fix stepped-up basis, & could be used by an enterprising lawyer to invalidate vehicle fee or other tax changes is another.

Since we're a top trader of energy with Russia, doesn't the Trump administration under the Russia sanctions law now have to impose tariffs on goods produced in the rogue country of the United States?

As Republicans avoid public scrutiny, the Maine Senate race is one of the last with multiple debates: four, to be exact. Lincoln-Douglas it isn't, but Troy Jackson met the moment, making Susan Collins answer for her vote for Brett Kavanaugh & her initial support for the Big Beautiful Bill.

In the Maine Senate race, Susan Collins knows that her advantage is wielding power, but Troy Jackson met the moment in the first two of four (count 'em) televised debates.

AOC to campaign with Abdul El-Sayed at six stops next Thursday and Friday, per email:

NEW YORK – Next week, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed will be joined on the campaign trail by special guest Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Abdul and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez will join Michiganders to discuss the cost of living crisis, our broken healthcare system, and policy solutions that put money and power back in the pockets of working Michiganders. Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and Abdul will campaign together in the Upper Peninsula, then the Congresswoman will host solo events in Southeast Michigan.

The people of Michigan are fed up with a status quo that prioritizes the interests of the wealthy, well-off, and well-connected. Together, Abdul and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez have proven that even in the face of unprecedented outside spending, a movement powered by the people, for the people will always prevail.

The Supreme Court gave Trump the ability to cancel temporary protected status & deport immigrants back to home countries in strife. But he hasn't done so with one country: El Salvador, where ally Nayib Bukele is in power and which has had a TPS designation for 25 years. Naomi Bethune reports on why.

The chair of the House Financial Services Committee, recipient of $1.4 million in PAC money, is getting outside help in his re-election race.
Sherrod Brown got $30 million in crypto cash dropped on him and thus far there's been no effect.

25 at once is a big part of the problem here. I think it alienates voter participation. I support direct democracy in theory but the practice in California is an enormous mess.

Somebody collect a couple million signatures for my $10 a ballot measure plan, paid for by the initiative sponsor. It would pass by about 90 points and we'd never have this tax on the free time of conscientious voters again

Between city, county, and state, Los Angeles voters will have 25 measures on the general election ballot. Where is our stipend for being part-time legislators this year? Maybe $10 a ballot measure?

California Democrats have been exposed as actively pushing for the Paramount-Warner Bros merger. With the new company giving David Ellison a $150 million bonus while firing Warner Bros' hitmakers, those Dems must own whatever happens next, writes Harold Meyerson.

Wall Street and corporations have schemed for decades to stack the bench with judges who rule against consumers and workers. Result? Federal courts have distorted the law to further rig the economy—and you're paying the price. Democrats must be clear-eyed about this challenge.

Hidden in plain sight, corporations have spent decades building a federal judiciary to rig the economy against working people. Our new report with @groundwork.bsky.social reveals how corporate interests have corrupted the federal courts. prospect.org/2026/10/06/h...

The thing you have to account for with stories like this is that the people who are loudest about needing more money for TV ads are the consultants who do media placement and therefore get rich when there's more money for TV ads.

🔥 from @hamiltonnolan.bsky.social.
I would add: billionaires are a renewable resource, sadly. Five years ago there was no OpenAI or Anthropic. We mint billionaires here in California with some regularity. The movement of capital moves both ways.

Some, perhaps, have legitimate fears that any wealth tax will just cause the rich to flee to other states. Prop 40 has been designed to make it hard to wriggle out of, but this fear is a perpetual one. Cities hear this when they pass local taxes; States hear it when they pass state taxes; nations hear it when they pass national taxes. It is true that the mobility of capital and the relative lack of mobility of labor is an inherent problem that makes the class war more difficult. It is also true that this is the sort of perpetual objection that is crafted to ensure that nobody anywhere ever does anything about a big problem. A global wealth tax would be ideal. In the meantime, every single locality and state and nation should be doing everything they can to capture as much of billionaire’s wealth as possible and funnel it back to the public. California, home of the tech industry, is the most sensible state in which to pass a billionaire tax. If the billionaires want to make it their life’s work to run around the world fleeing taxes, let them flee. What a sad life that would be for a group of people who could be doing anything.

Alejandro Betancourt is the key figure in the deal Venezuela made with the U.S. to give away a substantial chunk of its oil wealth. Betancourt's legal problems disappeared as the deal was being made. But Betancourt's rivalry with his longest-running hater, Thor Halvorssen, unlocks this strange tale:

Great profile here by Zachary Groz of Hallie Shoffner, a farmer populist scaring the crap out of Tom Cotton in Arkansas.

Shoffner understands the problem with agricultural markets.
