Yes, I just got back from Denmark where municipalities own their own discos & so not every decision or investment is analyzed on a "return next quarter" basis and it was ... pretty dreamy. We could just install batteries because they lower prices & emissions!

I'll give it a listen. My experience with c-suite interviews is ... mixed. Some brilliant people, some people whose tech knowledge is puddle-deep, some bullshitters, some overprepared bland say-nothing types ... it's a real crapshoot. I'm curious how you vet in advance!

@volts.wtfOct 10, 2026, 7:13 PM

🤷‍♂️ Depends on so many things. I mean, outside of ERCOT, most US grids have *plenty* of running room left before flexibility is exhausted.

@volts.wtfOct 10, 2026, 7:12 PM

Sure. But I also think it's worth keeping in mind that, relative to a post-permitting-reform future that *may* advantage gas (if a whole bunch of analysts & modelers are dead wrong & FF insiders have some special insight), we have a status quo that *visibly, measurably* advantages gas.

ERCOT (at least for now -- we'll see what happens if data center demand continues to skyrocket) is living out the @pierlafarge.bsky.social thesis: put enough batteries on your grid and it becomes boring & reliable.

Something I ask every provider of grid flexibility on my pod: you install a bunch of flexibility on the grid, the power demand curve evens out, prices even out, arbitrage no longer generates value, and then you've put yourself out of business. Then what? Happening to batteries in ERCOT:

This is not a good form of reasoning. It might be if you were trying to derive the content of the bill from the reactions, but you don't need to do that -- the content of the bill is public.

KEXP is counting down the top 550 (!) songs of the '90s, as voted by listeners, and they've gotten to the top ten. (10 is "Loser" by Beck.)

It's wild that this has happened in public view, right under our noses, and almost no one talks about it and I doubt 1 out of 1000 normies even knows it happened. (Not just "oligarchs." *Right-wing* oligarchs.)

As we were saying ...

I support the Pentagon’s decision to livestream the execution of mass-murderer Nidal Hassan.

Capital punishment is commanded by God in Genesis 9:6 to remind people of the sanctity of human life. The more people that can see that truth illustrated through a public execution, the better.

On Monday, I'm recording a podcast with Sam D'Amico, the head of Impulse (which makes those dreamy high-end induction cooktops) & co-author of the influential "Electric Slide" piece arguing that the future belongs to whoever dominates electricity. What should I ask him?

My apologies for this one. As Blaise Pascal said, "I have made this longer than usual because I have not had time to make it shorter." There are chapter headings, so you can jump around to the parts you're interested in. The discussion of politics ("why not wait?") is toward the end. More later.
