One. (Who is now widowed with six kids.)

Worth checking out THE LAST FIRST on AppleTV. A mountaineering movie that is very much from the director of MY KID COULD PAINT THAT and THE TILLMAN STORY.

I suspect that's true but broadly speaking, I think Ajay will ultimately be the more valuable player of the two, much as I love Cason. I guess he'll be our Manu?

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:32 PM

Funny part about that is that the real reporter *isn't* actually a luddite. He's just written that way to add a little more spark to his collaboration with the whistleblower.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:19 PM

That's true, but still a film that defers too much to Sorkin. Fincher was really the perfect guy to counterbalance what Sorkin does. Total night-and-day difference in terms of the dynamism of the staging.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:07 PM

Well now you have to tell me what that is.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:06 PM

This one is particularly flat because the conceit keeps the action pinned down and limited in scope. Resembles his script for STEVE JOBS in that way.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 2:00 PM

Main takeaway from THE SOCIAL RECKONING: It turns out "film direction" is an important part of what makes movies good.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 1:12 PM

The basic assumption (and probably reality) is that Cason Wallace will start in what was once Dort's spot. But I strongly believe Ajay's the better choice. You don't lose *that* much defensively b/c he's quite good—and has added muscle in the offseason—and the scoring/playmaking punch is better.

Chief Wiggum: "But they seemed so happy."

"What's different: the prose" is reminding me of that Barcelona exchange about the thing above the subtext that nobody talks about.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 4:14 PM

Yeah, it's an ideal situation to have someone who can be helpful in the short term while developing in the long. Like OKC can pull off the "two timelines" thing the Warriors wanted to do b/c they drafted so much better and their system is more accommodating for it.

I generally consider Gibney's work to be machine-tooled and artless and a bit antithetical to what great nonfiction filmmaking can do. But MUSK is bit better than usual and the sum of his work does reveal some interesting patterns.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:29 PM

Today for The Reveal, I went long on Alex Gibney's Enron and Elon Musk docs, and how the Gibney machine keeps turning out variations on the same story. ($): thereveal.film/alex-gibney-...

Well said. Other stand out element is that his stamina appeared to be vastly improved. He was so slow and got tired so easily in summer league.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:35 AM

Long-term hope is he gives you a lot of what Hartenstein can do but on a rookie deal. But he has some special skills, his passing especially.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:27 AM

Honestly, he looked completely awful in summer league. He has certainly worked on his conditioning, and it appears that he plays better when not surrounded by shitty players.

@scotttobias.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 3:20 AM

Losing my mind over how good Aday Mara looked in his minutes tonight. OKC may have found themselves another dude.
