The young guard elbows my ribs. “Oh,” I bow as my pulse races. “Forgive me, I’m forgetful today.” When I rise the corners of her lips curl up and her eyes meet mine.
I don’t want to die. I know what I am, what I’m destined for, even if she doesn’t. But I don’t want to die. I want to wear clean clothes, eat fresh bread, and look at her smile as often as possible. If I’m really here to protect her, I’ll swear my eternal allegiance.
Her voice takes on the tone of faux sweetness, like watered down juice. “My poor Reve, you must be exhausted. Won’t you join me for dinner?” The line of her hand gestures to the place setting nearest to me.
This is a trick, and if it’s not, I might already be dead…but demons don’t go to heaven, so I doubt the likelihood of that. “Y-yes, your highness.”
A servant assists Saphirra with her chair, and she smooths her skirt like its merely part of the ritual of sitting. Does she mean to share a meal with me, or is this a torture where I just sit near it? A rough hand clamps on my shoulder and pushes me down into the opposite chair. I flit my eyes up to the young guard who just nods as if to instruct me to stay.
A glimmer of amusement crosses Saphirra’s face. “Are you hungry? There is, of course, a right answer to that question.”
A right answer? She asked me before. “Yes, very much so.”
Wine flows from a carafe into Saphirra’s goblet, and a servant does the same for mine. She takes a sip and holds the glass to her chest as she lets a long breath out. We’re each served a plate of what appears to be red meat on the bone, potatoes, and butter. I stare at what’s before me. She saw what happened the last time, she’s aware of how—unpredictable I can get. Though this time I don’t think Cright will taunt me by making a foul remark about her.
She sighs and addresses me with a softened voice. “It’s alright, you can eat it.”
