Our neighborhood's transit is silent and doesn't serve. With varied housing, parking is a constant issue. Is it reasonable to spend 15-20 minutes driving to a grocery store, or should a walkable option be available in 5-7 minutes? Same for parks. Not enough buses are running. #transit #urbanplanning

After flooding due to inadequate infrastructure, it's clear we need to prioritize road and stormwater upgrades *before* new housing developments. Telling residents to use roads 'at their own risk' when they have cars and children is unacceptable. Build the foundation first. #urbanplanning

The old express bus connecting North Meadowvale and the airport disappeared. Now, journeys take 30-45 minutes through busy traffic. Reintroducing a limited-stop bus, maybe with dedicated lanes on boulevards, could reduce cars on Dairy Road and encourage transit use. #transit #urbanplanning

Milton was a town of 40,000 with little to do for high schoolers, so attendance was high. Services need to grow with housing, or it's a mistake. #community #urbanplanning

Residential areas often lack amenities like public transit, forcing car trips for basic needs. The proposal? Pre-planned mixed communities where everything is integrated from the start, not tacked on years later. #urbanplanning #community

Instead of fixing safety issues after schools are built, we're integrating them into the design phase. Raised crosswalks become automatic, instilling safety from the start. It’s about critical analysis and proactive solutions, not just reacting to problems. #urbanplanning #safety

Milton's rapid development is outpacing its infrastructure. Houses are being built, but roads, parks, and schools lag behind, creating daily struggles for residents. Lack of transit and walkable amenities impacts everything from commuting to school access. #urbanplanning #community

It's National Community Planning Month! Here at the DC Office of Planning, we're made up of several teams of professionals from different backgrounds, all working together to serve the District of Columbia.

The wrong kind of densification isn't it. Building up the central node with a pyramid concept, density in the downtown core, and around transportation hubs like GO stations is key. Nice 8-12 storey condo developments with affordable housing options are what we need. #urbanplanning #housing

PARKING. The council has to do something. How do you want to see supply/demand of parking addressed?

The densification we need isn't sprawl, it's building up around transit hubs. Think 8-12 storey condos and affordable housing near GO stations, creating a dense, walkable downtown core. #urbanplanning #housing

Is Milton growing into a city or just houses? The vision is for 15-20 minute communities, where daily needs are accessible by walking or active transport. While not there yet, developers are discussing this model. #urbanplanning #community

So the vision is high-density development in new areas, like skyscrapers in farmer's fields, far from services. They cut parking because they don't like cars, assuming people will bike miles to the metro. It's not realistic; people will drive. #urbanplanning #sustainability

The 'vision' for high-density development in new areas means skyscrapers in farmer's fields, far from services. Plans to make them 'eco-friendly' by limiting parking assume unrealistic bicycle commutes from distant suburbs to the metro. #urbanplanning #sustainability

Frustrated with the soulless sprawl of growing municipalities, a local council member decided to manage growth differently. The aim: approve smaller projects and avoid high-density housing in inappropriate areas, preserving community character. #localgov #urbanplanning

The familiar cycle: small town grows too fast, loses character, becomes a soulless suburb. A different approach to growth means managing it strategically, approving smaller projects, and avoiding high-density housing in the wrong places. So far, it's working. #localgov #urbanplanning

New builds often boast garages, but many aren't realistically sized for modern vehicles. This leads to streets clogged with parked cars, impacting traffic flow, neighborhood aesthetics, and even safety for pedestrians. #housing #urbanplanning #design

Milton's rapid growth sparks a question: city or just houses? The vision is 15-20 minute communities where daily needs are accessible by walking or active transport. Developers are on board with this concept. #urbanplanning #community

Development is constrained by the Niagara Escarpment and the Greenbelt. Trying to densify gets pushback, with concerns about losing backyards for 'concrete boxes in the sky.' Apparently, future generations won't get a backyard. #urbanplanning #housing
