Slow-motion simulation of the two black holes behind LIGO’s first detection, GW150914. Two dark circular shadows circle each other against a star field, then slam together and become one. Around them sits a bright Einstein ring, starlight smeared by the holes’ gravity. After they merge the ring still wobbles, because outgoing gravitational waves keep shaking those background images. In real time this would be over in roughly a third of a second.
