A view up into the lacy green canopy of a large tree against a pale blue sky: A small bird hops and flutters through the leaves, bobbing its tail, absorbed in dining on tiny insects. The birdsong one hears comes from a nearby White-eyed Vireo. The visible bird is too busy eating to vocalize. Though it’s distant and quick, if one zooms in, the distinctive black under-eye “spectacle” marking of the Prairie Warbler becomes clear. (Also—“Prarie” is a misnomer, as this species is not found in prairies, but is usually near mangroves, swamps, and it usually hunts in low shrubby areas.
