The graphic opening credits for the 1964 psychological thriller Dead Ringer were created by the famous animation and title design studio DePatie–Freleng Enterprises.
The Opening Credits Sequence:
The sequence is rendered as a minimalist, dark graphic animation set against a black background with music composed by André Previn. It visually introduces the film’s central theme—identical twin sisters caught in a web of identity theft and murder:
• The Separate Silhouettes: The sequence opens with two identical, stylized high-contrast silhouettes of a woman's face, shown in profile facing opposite directions.
• The Movement: The two profiles slowly glide horizontally across the screen toward one another.
• The Overlap and Fusion: As they collide in the center, they don't bounce off each other. Instead, they seamlessly cross over and fuse. When they merge, a striking graphical optical illusion is created—the overlapping negative space between the two profiles perfectly aligns to reveal a single, solid silhouette of a woman's face looking directly forward at the audience.
This haunting visual transition perfectly foreshadows how one twin (played by Bette Davis) will violently overwrite and absorb the identity of the other.
