I built the Torah map as a visual index to the Hebrew Bible, a text I find endlessly fascinating. Giving every verse a fixed place, in the order it's read, means that we can map a wide variety of data over it, and start to explore and understand the text. For example, we can search for names, and watch the narrative unfold: from the forefathers, through Moses, to King David. Then, even the simplest text analytics, like how long a verse is, can reveal useful insights. Here, one chapter of Lamentations is built differently from its neighbors. The Bible sits at the centre of more than two thousand years of writing about it: texts that quote and cite it. The map lets us see which parts of the text people have returned to again and again.
