What if the people who create the most wealth decided they didn't owe society a fucking thing?
That's basically the premise of Atlas Shrugged.
I bought this book because I wanted to understand what the fuss was about.
Turns out, it's essentially a 1,000-page capitalist manifesto.
Rand argues that the productive people are carrying everyone else, and eventually they should just say, “Fuck this,” and walk away.
Here's where I disagree:
Nobody succeeds in a vacuum.
Businesses depend on workers, infrastructure, education, customers, courts, and public institutions.
So when the book asks, “What do we owe each other?”
Its answer seems to be:
Not much.
I understand why it's influential.
I just don't agree with it.
Life's messy. So are my stories.
