This mallard is in eclipse. He moulted his pretty feathers over the summer and he's not looking to impress anyone heading into autumn. This change of colour helps him avoid predation.

Curious mallard checking me out.
I'm pretty sure she wanted me to feed her. Sorry lady, not today

I love chickadees. They seem to follow me around, acting goofy the whole time.

Trust fall!
In September, the ruby-throated hummingbirds were posing for photos while waiting at the feeders. They eat as much as possible before their migration to central America

It's that time of year... Silhouettes of geese in flight and noticing that I need to clean my sensor again! 😅

Thrilled that I got a snap of a tiny zebra jumping spider! My kids befriended the one that lives by our door. He seems as interested in us as we are in him.

The bees were hanging under some flowers this morning. Almost done with pollinator season, but I'm still seeing a few every day.

As winter nears there are fewer insects to observe. A warm say this week meant a sluggish tufted globetail let me take some photos. They serve double duty, pollinating and eating aphids!

My first encounter with a red bellied snake. They're a small woodland species native in my area.
This one was less than 10 inches long, and is about full grown!

Remarkably normal and common, mallards in the park have offered me unique closeness and odd angles. They spend time close by, directly under the bridges. They're the only bird I view from this angle.

These bumblebees spent the night sleeping on one of my last coreopsis flowers. They're very sluggish this morning, I don't think they'll be flying around much longer.

This heron flew low and fast straight at me. Both of us squawked in surprise and I barely got my camera up before it flew away.
