Well, after weeks of reading, planning, and scouting, today is the day! I’m headed up to the Cascades to collect my first Yamadori specimens. Cleared up some ambiguity with my life transplant permit yesterday with the Forest Service.

For me, respecting the journey and nature is #1. 💚 #pnw #yamadori

Found several candidate for collection today. Several abies lasiocarpa (subalpine fir). Need to do last minute verification with the ranger’s station on Wednesday to ensure it falls within my permit rules.

I’ve check all the ArcGIs topo layers but will verify. Breathtaking. #pnw #yamadori #bonsai

Heading back into the Cascades today to continue my yamadori hunt. I’ve marked several more areas to scout. It’s a race against time to explore the higher subalpine areas before the snow comes in heavy.

I didn’t dig anything today but the recon went extremely well. Found an area with subalpine species and lots of contorted firs and hemlock growing up around 4500ft

GPS marked several specimens for further, more thorough inspection and considerations. It’s so peaceful up there #pnw #yamadori #bonsai

The wife and I are preparing for my first yamadori hunt up in the cascade mountains. Mostly a scouting trip, but if I end up finding an amazing specimen I may collect it, depending on how well it’s locked into the soil.

Last of the bonsai moved. Dug up this one and I'm done for the season! A massive yamadori grapefruit. ( perk of the lower eastcoast "mountains") It wouldve been wiser to have help. But A womans gotta do what a womans gotta do.

A freshly dug grapefruit tree in random soil and a cut bpack plastic planter so I can see the nebari. It is as tall and nearly as wide as a tire and has one in the background. This tree is also throwing off all its leaves out of stress but thats perfectly normal for citrus in response to being collected. With a little bottom heat, humidity, and a lot of aftercare it should spend the season growing roots and be spritely next spring.

After the heat its finally collection season!! I lost most of my bonsai and its greenhouse to a hurricane. I quickly planted what was left to increase survival. I've harvested 2 to test the waters. They'll be overwintering in my makeshift growroom.

A barky pine tree pushing out a shoot with buds!! A freshly potted grapefruit bonsai with a trunk nearly as big as a tire. This big boy is still pissed and throwing off its leaves but its still green. Ive run out of media so its living on the edge with a blend of garden soil and old seed starter mix.
