Writers: Do you have issues keeping your dialogue tags appropriate for your character? For me, it's making sure all of them are "dogish" in some way.
At least I get to use "growled" unironically lol.

The beagle could almost feel them beyond the grass as his breath wheezed between his ribs, their furious jaws snapping, yellowed claws scrabbling, fur coats thinning and stretching in great holes against the bitter dusty wind. Impinged with the wild, touched and held by no man, given to the law of pure primal instinct, these were dogs no bigger than beagles, but sharper than beagles, more blessed and quick than beagles, more frightening and determined than beagles. Bad felt grateful for the flooding smell of full blood covering his nose, washing out the memory of dirty water, of chemicals, of sanitization and wet concrete. He could forget it and never let it be known again. Scrubbed away by dirt and blood, he could be free to never be clean, not so viscerally and never past the fur to the skin, the sensation of those sponges that rubbed right down to the bone. A layer of dirt could forever be his friend.

“How were the sticks, Liv? Meet any cowgirls?” Liv’s eyes widened. “I met a ku,” she blurted. “She ate…grass.” Beverly shook her head. “Okay.” Everyone was watching Liv now. Her leg bounced like she’d finished an entire carafe of coffee herself. “Nothing happened,” she said, returning everyone’s glances. Stella bit back a smile and patted her thigh, trying to still Liv’s bouncing leg. “We didn’t really interact with anyone,” Stella offered. “But those we did meet were pleasant and welcoming.” Beverly’s eyes sparkled. “On that note, I’m unwelcoming you. Writing snippet: The irony wasn't lost on her. Dying of thirst mere feet from the world's most bountiful source of water. She figured she'd go to it eventually, cupping mouthful after mouthful, simply for the relief, though she knew it would only hasten the end. The sun was high. Searing. No place for shelter—just sand, as far as she could see. Sand coating her arms and legs, biting at her cheeks, invading the desert of her tongue. Her head throbbed at the smallest movement, and after some time, her vision started to fade in and out, sunlight replaced by darkness replaced by sunlight, smeared and stained across the whitewashed sky. Micah’s voice in her ear and gone again. Her mother, then, pleading something, but that couldn't be right because she was gone. They were both gone. She blinked away tears that wouldn't come. The roar of the ocean filled in their stead. So bright. Such blinding light. And then a hand, shot straight from the sky, manifesting from nothing—from light, from air—as if the very hand of God were reaching for her. Reaching and reaching, and she thought: Good. I'm ready. Take me home to them. Forgive me. My absolution.

She wished she at least had her bad-ass professor boots, what Johanna had always called them, the ones with the heels that clunked so satisfyingly on stage. Not much good for sprinting, though. If it came to that. Stomach in knots, wondering if she might simply vomit on the spot, Nya stepped into the lights. She’d titled her talk vaguely. “Neuroregeneration in Novocolenterata herecii” — the words hung suspended in mid-air, rendered in softly fluorescent purple holographics above her as she made her way to the podium to a smattering of polite applause. She placed her hands on the lectern, just to keep them still. Usually at this point she’d pick out a couple of students, find someone paying attention, and focus her lecture on them. Today that would have to be Per. This whole conference was primarily for broadcast, and the stage lighting was more intense than she was used to; she blinked, momentarily dazzled by floods that usually weren’t there. When her vision cleared, there was Per, sitting dead center of the third row, an attractive young woman to his right, an empty seat to his left, looking as though he wanted to be seen. Class, she thought, was in session.

But there was something she was forgetting. She’d tapped her way through most of the alphabet in Morse when it hit her. She pulled her legs back and stood; Shade’s head hit the bench and bounced. “Thanks for the warning, babe.” His tone was snide but she ignored it as she retrieved her data pad from counter, found the file she was looking for and pulled it up, passed it to Kael. She leaned against the counter as he studied the pic, brows drawn in. Then held it out across the table, “Data pad, Z.” Shade’s hand reached up and Kael pushed the pad into it. She knew the moment he opened his eyes from the hissed intake of breath. He’d reacted to it before, she remembered, and was quietly amazed that they’d both forgotten about the mural until now. “We probably weren’t meant to remember,” Shade noted as he sat up. He placed the data pad in the center of the table where they could all see it. The mural had been in one of the lower chambers of the temple. A strange abstract of darkness pushing against a woven maelstrom of light and dark in purples, grays and whites. Something about the dark side had her pulse hammering. Kael glanced over at her— damn his augments—and held out a hand. She stepped forward and he wrapped an arm around her hips.

Laughter screamed from amusement park rides, and children charged past with balloons streaming like tails, their passage wafting the smoke and spice from nearby food stalls. Cady was right, they needed this. One scent cut through the rest, a blend of cinnamon and burnt sugar that sparked sweet childhood memories. Aria grabbed her sister’s hand and pulled her into the fray.

Without thinking, the weapons were already in my hand, their power and desires overwhelming. I lifted effortlessly to the skies as I was cloaked in fire, twin pairs of wings like a dazzling phoenix sprouted from my backside, and began raining down feathers of molten destruction. The ship ignited, consumed like it was nothing. But it wasn’t real. The disturbing yet welcoming visions of Anscix and Trimenspirium were no longer contained to my thoughts but were spreading and fooling my reality. Even sheathed, fully, their lust leaked liberally into me. How long did I have?

We’ll be waiting for you on the other side.” “Do me a favor,” Mikiva added on her way out. “Kick the bastard in the teeth for me, will you?” Fox laughed in spite of herself. “I’ll do my best.” Leaving her in the chamber, they stepped out into the dazzling morning light. Av’ry held up a hand to shield his face from the blowing snow, then glanced back at Mikiva, who was testing the edge of a knife with her thumb. “Ready to do this?” he asked. “Of course.” She grinned. “After all, this is the easy part.” “Maybe even the fun part.” Av’ry agreed. “I’m certainly looking forward to dropping a piece of a mountain on the prick.” “Even if it won’t really do anything to him?” “Still cathartic.” He shrugged.
