Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the first publication of A. A. Milne’s book #Winnie-the-Pooh.

An illustration of (from left to right) the characters Rabbit, Christopher Robin, Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, and Kanga by a stream, wherein Roo is taking a swim, with bugs flying overhead. By Ernest Howard Shepard (public domain; https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winnie-the-Pooh_137.png).

100 years ago today, the first #Winnie-the-Pooh book was released. The book was later adapted by Disney in 1966, where the animated franchise and the character would become a cultural phenomenon.

The image depicts a scene from A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh stories, illustrated in the style of E. H. Shepard. The illustration is in black and white with minimal color, primarily focusing on the characters and text. Main Elements: The central figures are Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet, drawn from behind and walking away from the viewer. Pooh, a large yellow bear, is wearing his iconic red t-shirt. Piglet, a small pink pig, is wearing a red scarf and a striped green sweater. They are walking across a snowy or icy ground, leaving behind a trail of footprints. Scene Details: The background suggests a wintry environment. There are sparse, dry grass-like elements on the left and a rough sketch of a tree trunk and branches on the right. The ground is depicted as flat and covered with what appears to be snow or frost, dotted with small leaves or debris, and prominently marked with the paw prints of the two characters. The illustration style is sketchy and hand-drawn, characteristic of Shepard's work. Color Characteristics: The image is predominantly black and white. Pooh's fur is a pale yellow, his t-shirt is a muted red, and Piglet's scarf is also red. Piglet's sweater has dark green stripes. The overall impression is that of an aged or classic illustration, with the colors being subtle and not vibrant. The background is a light grayish-white, suggesting a muted, wintery atmosphere. Composition Layout: The composition is framed with a black border. The text is placed above and below the illustration, forming part of the overall piece. The top text reads: "Is he dead yet?" asked Piglet. The bottom text reads: "No", answered Pooh "Fuck", said Piglet. The characters are positioned slightly off-center to the right, walking towards the right side of the frame. The footprints form a diagonal line leading from the bottom left towards the characters, drawing the viewer's eye into the scene. The tree on the right provides a vertical element that balances the horizontal movement…

On behalf of Winnipeg the Bear, Piglet, Owl, Eeyore, Tigger and young Master Christopher Robin, the station house extends an overdue doff of the helmet to Messrs. A.A. Milne (writer) and Ernest H. Shepard (illustrator), gentle Citizen Woodsmen for the ages. Oh bother, indeed! #satire #winnie

E H Shepard continued to work for PUNCH for over 50 years. He grew heartily sick of the bear though, and here is his last account of his most famous character from 1966. #Winnie #WinniethePooh #Pooh

But the bear - inspired by E H Shepard's son's own teddy bear, Growler - may have already appeared in a PUNCH cartoon by Shepard from 1913 #Winnie #WinniethePooh #Pooh #icons #classics
