I used another early morning to explore Centennial Park in Sydney, which allowed me to catch up with a lot of the common local species at a more relaxed pace #wildoz #Australianbirds #birds

Caladenia flava - Cowslip Orchid

This Cowslip orchid, with its distinctive bright red markings, is likely the currently undescribed subspecies referred to as the Brookton Cowslip (Caladenia flava subsp. 'late red') 💛❤️

Time for another #AwesomeBirds #WildOz edition. This dapper chappy just returned to el rancho from up North where they spend the cooler months. A hollow nester like all members of its family (and order), their repeated calls are prominent in soundscapes across Australia’s woodlands and dry forests.

Friday flower
Spinifex is in flower following recent rains in the region. Spinifex, or tjanpi, has many traditional uses. The seeds can be milled to make seedcakes, the fibres are used for weaving, and the resin is a powerful adhesive used in spear making.

I kept a hire car for the whole stay so I could do early morning pre-work birding most days, even if it did mean fighting Sydney rush hour traffic. One morn I went west of Sydney - the suburbs of Mulgoa as Swift Parrots had been there; I managed good flight views #wildoz #Australianbirds #birds

This Common Bronzewing was perched up just post dawn and more obliging than the Swift Parrots which I never managed to see perched! It was also my first encounter with a lot of open-country common birds like this Maned Duck. Magpie-Lark, Noisy Miner, Galah and Grey Butcherbird were all observed for the first time, whilst I also had my only encounters with Bell Miner and Eastern Shriketit.I got to the Sydney Botanical Gardens after work and quickly found the roosting Powerful Owl pair and accompanying fledged chick (pictured here).

Happy #wrensday from this gorgeous Splendid Fairywren (Malurus splendens)

She perched on this bottlebrush seed pod while watching for insects to catch for her breakfast

Today’s #WildlifeWednesday is the critically endangered Western Underground Orchid (Rhizanthella gardneri). One of the world’s rarest orchids, this tiny plant spends its entire lifecycle underground, relying on mycorrhizal fungi of nearby Melaleuca shrubs for nutrients!

Another Cradle Mountain local. This cheeky Black Currawong gave me a rather intense stare through the window of the lodge I was staying in, checking whether I had anything to share.

It’s hump day!
Camels (and other large feral herbivores such as horses and donkeys) are a big problem in the AW region. We work with communities to manage the risk posed by these big beasts. This mob of camels was seen on recent fieldwork in the Nullarbor National Park.

At the end of Sept I spent just over 10 days in Sydney with work, my first visit to Australia. Whilst it was a work trip, I made sure I did some birding! A visit to Stafford Farm Track south of Sydney got me off to good start, finishing with a seawatch off Manly #wildoz #Australianbirds #birds

I did not know that we have a bird called a black-breasted buzzard. This one is called Bernice (alliteration much?) and she used a stone to crack open an emu egg, which is too big for her to carry. #Healesville 🦉 🪶 #birds #WildOz

A trainer is bending to retrieve the broken bits of a fake emu egg, that Bernice is running away from. She has a hefty wing span - 1.5 metres I think.

I’ll start with I’m no zoologist and here’s an interesting video. The bird at the start is intriguing. It is an immature Crimson rosella BUT it has the wing colouring, abdomen, vent, & face patch of an Eastern rosella. A hybrid? I asked Fbooky… well 🤬 ☕️ ⛈️
