#WeekendReading: Rodriguez et al., on the carbon balance between calcification and organic matter uptake in oyster reefs as they catch up with sea level change. 🧪🌊

Link: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-026-02121-y

As the measurement period decreases and excludes older reef material, the fluxes of carbon to the reef (positive values; brown) and to the atmosphere from the production of CaCO3 (negative values; blue) increase disproportionately making the reefs net exporters of carbon (box-whisker plot), and more so today than before 1900 CE. Restored reefs were built in 1997 and 2000 and sampled in 201114. Box-and-whisker plots illustrate the sum of carbon export from the formation of shell and burial from the accumulation of OM. Box centre lines are medians, edges are quartiles and whiskers are minimum and maximum values. Symbols mark mean flux, are grouped into periods and denote the Shallotte (square), Back Sound (circle), Newport (triangle), White Oak (cross) and North River (star) estuaries.

#WeekendReading: Sivan et al. on cryptic biogeochemical cycles in marine sediment, specifically those related to methane. 🧪🌊⚒️

Link: https://www.annualreviews.org/content/journals/10.1146/annurev-marine-040425-014149

Conceptual framework for cryptic biogeochemical cycling in methanic marine sediments. (a) Sulfate–methane structure in marine sediments with the addition of relevant porewater profiles in the methanic zone. (b) Cryptic processes at the bottom of the SMTZ, where methane and sulfate are consumed mainly by S-AOM, while coupled sulfur and iron transformations recycle intermediates and sustain reactions with little expression in concentration profiles. (c) Cryptic cycling in the main methanic zone, far below the SMTZ,
where methane production and consumption, iron and manganese reduction, nitrogen transformations, and other reactions occur simultaneously, with rapid recycling of intermediates maintaining low concentrations despite active metabolism. Abbreviations: S-AOM, sulfate-coupled anaerobic oxidation of methane; SMTZ, sulfate–methane transition zone
