Analizzando la composizione dei dischi di detriti estremi, gli scienziati hanno dedotto che i dischi ricchi di silice sono il risultato di impatti ad alta energia di oggetti delle dimensioni di Marte, mentre quelli poveri di silice sono il risultato di eventi meno energetici causati da corpi delle dimensioni della Luna.I tipi di collisioni che avvengono all’interno dei giovani sistemi stellari noti come “dischi di detriti estremi” sono rilevanti per la comprensione da parte degli scienziati del nostro sistema solare, che si ritiene abbia subito eventi di impatto simili, i quali hanno dato origine alla Luna e plasmato lo stato iniziale della Terra.

Le brillanti galassie dorate disseminate nell’immagine appartengono a un ammasso di galassie denominato MACS J0454.1-0300. Le galassie arancioni concentrate su un lato dell’ammasso non fanno in realtà parte dell’ammasso: si trovano molto più lontano da noi rispetto alle galassie che costituiscono MACS J0454.1-0300. MACS J0454.1-0300 è a sua volta incredibilmente lontano: la luce proveniente da queste galassie ha viaggiato per così tanto tempo fino a noi che osserviamo l’ammasso com’era quando l’Universo aveva circa 8 miliardi di anni. Sebbene questo ammasso di galassie costituisca di per sé un prezioso oggetto di studio scientifico, le vere protagoniste di questa immagine sono le galassie che appaiono deformate e allungate, come un dipinto trascinato e sbavato da una mano gigantesca....
