My perception of the genre has shifted as I've come to understand that documentaries are not solely interviews with a bunch of different people in a dull room. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
When a documentary is not only interested in "informing" its viewers, it tends to lead to inaccuracy and fictionalization. To make it more entertaining, in a capitalist society, you must lie a bit, which undermines the documentary's truthfulness. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
The responsibility that comes with staging reality is being prepared for damage control. Obviously, documentaries will face immense public backlash for their fictionalization, but that is a cost they have to pay and defend. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
I believe claiming "truth" is taking a true story, reenacting or covering it, but adding a few 'slight' details to just amplify it. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
So how is belief made? Not by facts alone. It’s the close-ups, the silence, the pauses someone left in the edit. I used to watch docs to find out what’s true. Now I’m watching how they get me to believe it, and honestly that’s way more interesting. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
Biggest shift: docs don’t only inform. Mothlight is haunting, Hennessy Youngman is basically seducing you with jokes, and the race convo is meant to make you squirm. They’re trying to make me feel something, not just learn something. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
Staging isn’t the problem I thought it was. The 16mm scenes in Beyond This Place are obviously staged and I didn’t feel tricked at all. Flaherty’s staging felt different because he hid it. The responsibility is being upfront, not being unstaged. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
I used to think claiming “truth” meant proving something happened. Now it feels more like a promise. 160 Characters doesn’t prove anything, it just shows me her texts and asks me to trust how she remembers it. And I did. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
At the start of this I said I trust docs with real people, a narrator, and shaky camera. After these five films, pretty much none of those held up. Mothlight has no people, no sound, no camera, and it still felt true. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
What changed for me is realizing that documentaries aren't always completely objective. Even when they show real events, the filmmaker's choices influence what we understand. I think I'll pay more attention to those choices now.
i feel like my view on the genre of documentaries has expanded a lot after watching all the different examples. the docs vary so differently in style and how they convey their message, which is rly cool to see. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
when docs are focused on also intriguing viewers, i feel like they focus a lot on entertainment and being creative when trying to show reality from their lens. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
when staging reality to viewers, it’s important to try to be as accurate as possible bc viewers place a lot of trust in documentaries and people believe that documentaries just show reality. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
i think claiming “truth” just means showing us reality. they are literally showing us what’s in the world and our reality while making us observe things we never noticed. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
i feel like documentaries kinda just show the world around us through different lenses to bring awareness on specific topics they are discussing. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
The biggest difference now is that I am noticing the writers decisions much more. I’m paying attention to the sound, images, editing, what gets emphasized, and what gets left out. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
Mothlight probably changed my idea of documentary the most because it barely looked like what I expected a documentary to be. I just couldn't really tell what the film was trying to accomplish. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
I honestly thought documentaries were true stories made into films. Now I have changed my view of docs. The stories are made entertaining through editing, music, effects, and the choice of what moments to include. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
That flexibility is what surprised me most. A writer can change pacing, add music, choose certain images, or even stage parts of a scene, and the documentary can still feel “real” to the audience. The story can be shaped without completely leaving reality behind. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
After watching all five, I think a documentary is something that claims the truth while still having the ability to alter certain details for storytelling or entertainment. It can be based off the truth without being exactly the truth. #hwa5 #watchingdifferently
