On September 14–16, 2026, a set of 6 new eruptive fissure vents opened at #Kīlauea summit along the western wall of Halemaʻumaʻu. These vents opened after a period of repressurization of the summit magma storage system had taken place...

On the night of Sept. 30, as flames, spatter and lava flows erupted from the north and south vents in Halemaʻumaʻu at the summit of Kīlauea, magma was also making a new path below the surface of the caldera. How does an intrusion happen during an ongoing eruption? #USGS #VolcanoWatch #Kilauea

The Maunaiki shield itself is a relatively recent addition to the landscape. This broad high point with great views formed over 8 months from Dec. 1919 to Aug. 1920.
At the time, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory was still relatively new, having started operations in 1912. #VolcanoWatch #Kilauea
