I found this some time ago while hiking. It is very light and about 2.5 cm across. It looks to me like a light accreted sand ball, that the outside melted and created a glass-like shell that when cooled, caused it to shrink into a mesh. What do you think? #photography #geology #Rocks #volcanology

Understanding an eruption means linking what we see at the surface to processes occurring deeper underground.
A useful reminder that complex fluid phenomena often require multiple scales of observation.
New Nature study: moderate volcanic eruptions + wildfires have humidified the stratosphere since 2005, adding up to 203M tons of water vapor.

A lava flow records its own thermal history.
Its final shape reflects how the molten rock moved, exchanged heat with its surroundings and solidified.
Deep-sea lava fields offer clues about fluid flow and #PhaseChange under extreme conditions.
