The image shows a Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) with its signature jaw-like snapping traps on top, and a sundew (Drosera species) covered in sticky, glandular tentacles on the bottom.

Key Care Tips for Carnivorous Plants

• Water: Use only distilled water, reverse osmosis (RO) water, or collected rainwater. Tap water contains minerals that will kill these plants over time. Keep the soil consistently moist (often by placing the pot in a shallow tray of water).
• Soil: Plant them in a nutrient-poor medium like a 50/50 mix of peat moss and perlite. Never use standard potting soil or Miracle-Gro, as fertilizers will burn their roots.
• Light: They need full, direct sunlight (at least 6 hours a day) or a strong grow light to stay healthy and develop deep red color inside their traps.
• Feeding: Do not fertilize the soil. They catch their own bugs, or you can occasionally feed them a tiny live or thawed frozen insect (like a small flightless fruit fly) only if they are grown outdoors.

Always thought these challenges would be overwhelming, but it's been manageable. Maybe the prompts are really engaging? Having a theme of one being a shelf helped the process, made it easier to create. Fly Trap is one of my favs BTW! #curiotober #curiotober26 #inktober #inktober26 #venusflytrap

#VenusFlytrap digestive glands (look like raspberries) sit on top of the palisade mesophyll cells, and adjusting the focal depth of the #microscope is necessary to understand the structure of both. When it focusses on the leaf part, you can see the glittering chloroplasts. Photosynthesis page below.

Spent the evening with the #microscope, got some nice shots of #VenusFlytrap digestive glands and trigger hairs. The red pigment on their leaf starts in the digestive glands and spreads outward. The glands are circular blobs.

Focus on the leaf surface. Red circular digestive glands are sprinkled on top of elongated leaf cells. Some cells toward the bottom are still green, most of them are beginning to turn red.

Increased magnification shows the circular digestive gland looks kind of bumpy like a raspberry.

Two digestive glands bleeding their pigment into the cells below.

Trying again with a store rescue Dionaea muscipula, and the two I picked up are distinct despite being “typicals.” One is paler and normal in tooth shape, the other deep red and has some fused teeth going on.

Bog update. The tiniest flytrap had a leaf open, shown next to the larger one with my pinky nail pointing at it for scale. Also shown, my new collection so far, and a bonus shot of some pretty jelly fungus on my bench.

The flytrap leaf in the center of the image just opened as well, but there is a smaller one just in front of a pinky nail coming in on the left side. Red sphagnum moss surrounds the young plants.

A close up of the young flytrap's trap opening.

An older Venus flytrap, the traps blushing crimson red in their health, ion front of a tray of purple sphagnum moss and seedlings. A terracotta colored plastic pot in the corner holds what was purchased at Lowe's, along with the flytrap. The others were found growing in the moss, as "weeds" in a big grab bag of live moss that will also grow more beautiful with time.

Golden jelly fungus growing on an old green bench, paint peeling from the wood and a few leaves sprinkled on by the wind.

A bunch of cool carnivorous plants are hitting grocery stores and hardware stores across America right about now, here's some issues with the labeling you should consider before you buy.
