Lu's gone from having his clothes made by royal tailors, to buying second hand, to affording court-level clothes on his own, to wearing whatever Sol would allow him to, to bare-minimum needs in the army.

He misses having comfortable shoes more than anything. ⬇️

This is part of Sid's backstory and I doubt it will make it into the main series, though I'd like to put it online somewhere at least. It was too damn fun to write to not have *somewhere* to share it.

CW: murder mentioned, dead body

#WritingPrompt #VeilOfStarlight #VOSsnippets

Sid smoked a strongly spiced cigarette wrapped in Percival's coat in the armchair. He'd stolen the cigarette from an inner pocket of the coat as well as the Major-General's pants.
If he was going to be arrested and executed, he deserved to wear pants in his opinion. He certainly wasn't wearing whatever remained of the dress on the floor.
He blew a few smoke rings before glancing at the dress, staring for a moment before checking yet again that Percival was still dead.
He really was fond of maroon.
The heavy wooden latch from outside the door shifted and he rested his head against the back of the chair, taking what he expected to be the last drag of any cigarette for the remainder of his drastically shortened life.
Stella stood back from the door as it gradually opened.
He stole another drag of smoke as he curiously watched, waiting for her to appear.
Eventually, Stella poked her head around the door, her eyes landing on the bed first. She paused, brow raised before she found Sid.
He silently waved once, expression flat as he sighed smoke.
"Well… You certainly had an interesting night," she stated, stepping into the room and pulling the door closed behind her.
Sid scrutinized her. She wasn't horrified. She wasn't shocked. She didn't even seem concerned. He watched as she calmly approached the bed and laid a hand on Percival's chest.
She looked back at him with a quiet sigh. "You'll have to leave the coat." She smirked playfully, "Dashing as it is on you."
He scoffed, looking away with a shake of his head. "Why didn't you just kill him yourself?" He asked, surprised at how rough his voice sounded.
"Now, dear Sid, when did I ever even suggest I wanted him dead?" She said with mock innocence, laying a hand on her chest defensively. "I hope I never gave you that impression, did I?" She tutted with a small shake of her head. "A decorated war hero?"

I have something more sinister than spooky.

Barefoot, Lu followed Stella through the living room. His stomach dropped when she passed the door that led to the rooms dedicated to entertaining downstairs. He stopped, watching with growing horror as she continued to the next flight of stairs.
Before she noticed, he caught up, heart pounding. He was praying she would lead him to the larger, separate rooms on the first floor across from their front door, for more discreet entrances and exits from court members. Terror twisted in his gut when she turned left toward the next set of stairs.
She was going to the room in the basement. The one that locked from the outside.
"N-no," he stood at the top of the stairs, on the verge of vomiting.
She stopped mid-step without looking back at him. "What was that?"
"Ple-please," he whispered, hand to his stomach as tears began to stream again. "Not… not that. Not there."
Stella looked back over her shoulder, expression flat and cold.
    "St–mom. Please."
"Oh, I'm 'mom' now?" Her brow rose in mock surprise. She climbed back up the steps and took his arm. "Remember this next time you want to avoid seeing someone."

The scene where Lu explains the meaning of his family's names to Sorrel and they talk about the future 🥰

#VOSsnippets #VeilOfStarlight

"'Velum'. Does that mean something in Calorian?" Sorrel asked as he adjusted on his back. He pillowed his skull on Lu's arm, sliding in tighter against his side as Lu wrapped his arm around his shoulders.
They were laying naked together in the mill, looking up through the larger holes in the roof to the sky above. Counting shooting stars and searching for constellations.
Lu sighed, getting more comfortable. "Loosely, it means 'Veil'. Like… a separation that you can see through."
"So… 'Morning Star Veil'? Is that the right translation?" Sorrel glanced at him, hoping he remembered Lu’s formal name.
"Yeah," Lu nodded, smiling at him. "Basically."
    "What's the proper translation then?"
    "It's… really dramatic." Lu grimaced.
    "So it's fitting then?"
Lu roughly shifted his arm, knocking Sorrel's head forward.
Sorrel laughed, rolling to his side to see him clearly. "C'mon, tell me?"
Lu huffed, turning his face to hide his embarrassed grin. "'Radiant Morning Star through the Veil of Night'."
"Whoa, that's a mouthful." Sorrel raised his brow.
Lu rolled his eyes. "The rest of them are just as dramatic. Sid's is 'Silver Twilight brings the Veil of Stars' or something."
"What about Nit and Neb?" Sorrel asked curiously.
"Uh… Nit is 'Midnight Stellar Veil' and Neb is… 'Veil Hides The Moonlight Star'." "I like your guys' names."
Lu chewed his lip for a moment, looking back up at the sky. "I… I think I wanna do the same for my kids. Someday," he quietly confessed.
"Well," Sorrel wrapped his arm around Lu's waist, sighing as he rested his face on Lu's shoulder again. "Since they'll be Calorian and you have to carry 'em, I think you should get to name 'em whatever you want. Let's not name 'em after flowers though."
Lu slowly held Sorrel closer, his heart pounding. "Y-you-? You want kids with me?"
"Of course I do," Sorrel easily replied. "I love you, why wouldn't I want kids with you someday? We don't have to, of course. I just wanna be with you, but kids do sound… I dunno. I like the sound of having kids with you… But if you don't mind being the one to carry 'em since non-Calorians can't, then I don't see wh–"
Sorrel gasped, suddenly underneath Lu. Lu's expression was intense, but excited.
"You're serious?" Lu asked, arms braced by Sorrel's face.
"I-? Yeah? I wouldn't lie to you, but especially not about that."
Lu beamed, elated sparks flying as he kissed him.
"You'll be a great dad, you know," Sorrel told him, smiling sweetly as he cupped Lu's face.
"So will you," Lu replied, kissing him again.

Lu wobbled when he took another step, but pressed on, listing sideways with his next unsteady step. The only thing that stopped him from falling was John grabbing his free arm to catch him.
Gods damn it all…
"Are you hurt?" John asked, holding tight to his arm as he looked him over. Thankfully injuries on Lu would be quickly obvious, especially in the dark.
"N-no," he shook his head, still breathing hard. "Just m-my fuckin' chest," he lividly snapped.
"Ah, well, that's fine then," John snickered as he slipped his arm around Lu's back to hold him steady. Lu weakly chuckled as John guided him further up the path toward the Quarter-Master's wagon. John sat him on a barrel and gave his shoulders a reassuring squeeze.
"Oh-! Good gods, Briar!" John quietly snapped, half-laughing at his casually-naked wife when she appeared. He jerked off his shirt and shoved it at her.
She scoffed. "You know this won't fit m–"
"You can make yourself smaller! Cover yourself!" He interrupted in a harsh whisper, holding it over her chest.
"You do realize I–?"
"I am aware you are a shadow. I do not care!"
Briar snorted, indulging her husband and holding the far too small garment over her torso that was already modestly hidden by her rolling black form. "He's fine, by the way," she added, disappointed.
"I figured. The man lost an arm once." John scoffed.
"What happened?" Briar asked Lu.
Lu heaved a sigh, absently rubbing his chest before he dropped his hand to his lap. "I left him. He… did not take it well." He chuckled dryly, fading into another sigh.
"About fuckin' time." John said with a firm nod of approval as Briar tipped her head back with a sigh of relief.
"What?"
"You know how many times I've had to convince Briar not to go kill him?" John somberly asked.
"Too many," Briar bitterly interjected.
"Yeah, 'cause I'd've helped and where would that get us?" John very quietly shot back.
"A world without him," she replied with a smirk in her voice.

A quick scene where Stella makes a short, but very unwelcome appearance.

CW: Body shaming, transphobia

Lu's convinced his sister Nebula to switch clothes with him at a ball so he can secretly dance with Sorrel. (They look very similar, it's a good plan.)

#VeilOfStarlight #VOSSnippets

"Are you tw–? Are you wearing one of Lu's dresses?" Sid asked with a grin, doing a double-take after he opened Neb's bedroom door. He was stunned at the sight of Lu helping her lace the back of a black and silver corset that complimented the black and dark blue of the mostly sheer dress.
"Not like she would fit in anything else," Stella snidely remarked as she leaned around Sid to see for herself. "Flat-chested and boxy as she is…"
Neb quietly looked away, resting a hand just under her ribs.
Lu bit his bottom lip to contain his furious comeback, pausing for a second without looking at Stella before he continued gently tightening the lacing.
"It suits you, actually. Maybe you should stop trying to fix what you can't change and jus–"
"Don't you have somewhere to be?" Sid snapped, glaring at her. "You were mad they're running late and you're still here?"
Stella scowled at him, her perfectly made-up face twisting to something ugly. With an irritated huff, she left.
Sid took a step inside and shut the door behind him, locking it. "Okay, that looks fucking incredible on you, but what the hells is going on?" He asked with warm excitement.
"Uh, Lu convinced me to try something different."
    "Have you seen yourself yet?"
Neb softly shook her head, looking down.
"I wanted it to be a surprise," Lu told Sid with a smirk.
"Stella was definitely jealous," Sid told her.
Neb scoffed. "Doubtful. You know… considering." She commented bitterly as she looked down, her toes anxiously curled in her socks, peeking out beneath the hem of the dress… Down the front of her flat torso.
Lu intentionally interrupted her self-conscious gaze by stepping in front of her to adjust the bow at the top of the low neckline above her sternum.
Sid took her hand, getting her attention with a quick smile before Lu guided her backward to sit at her desk chair.

For "coming out day" the only real "coming out" scenario I have in #VeilOfStarlight At least so far

Lu's gender-fluid, but early in their relationship Sorrel doesn't know that yet. Not from Lu hiding it, Sorrel just hasn't seen him be feminine yet

It goes better than Lu expected.

(context in alt)

*Context: Lu's sister Nebula works with Sorrel and they look similar enough to get confused for twins often*

Lu ducked into a hallway and quickly tried to scamper away unnoticed, pulling up a handful of his dress and regretted wearing not only the dress, but the damn heels too.
"Neb?" Sorrel curiously called from the entrance to the hall.
Lu stopped, cringing as he cautiously replied, "Uh, n-no?"
    "Lu?" Sorrel asked in astonishment.
Lu cringed harder as he listened to Sorrel's footsteps approach from behind.
"Why are you in a dress?" Sorrel questioned as he got closer.
"I uh," Lu cleared his throat, not looking at him. "I-I like wearing dresses sometimes?" he replied with a grimace.
"Oh," Sorrel said with quiet understanding.
Lu glanced nervously at him, surprised to see he wasn't totally disgusted.
Sorrel lightly shrugged. "I mean, that makes sense. I've seen you with makeup and Sid certainly doesn't wear it, so I'm assuming it's not a Calorian thing, right?"
"I-I don't know, actually," Lu anxiously chuckled. "Stella hasn't told us much about Calor."
"Oh," Sorrel frowned. "Well, it suits you regardless," he added with a quick smile.
    "You…you don't mind?"
"Why would I mind what you wanna wear? You look fantastic in anything, but I won't lie," Sorrel slowly looked him up and down again with a sultry gleam in his eye. "That looks uh… Fuck, Lu, that looks really good on you..."
"I can't wait four days to see you alone again," Lu admitted breathlessly.
    "O-oh," Sorrel blushed
"My place is empty this time of day," Lu told him, still holding up a handful of his dress
Sorrel blushed even darker, the notebook in his hand nearly slipped from his grasp. He barely caught it in time before it fell, and he looked back at Lu, flustered, and nodded
Lu took his hand and started to excitedly pull him down the hall. "The dress stays on," he told Sorrel over his shoulder.
"Oh, fuck yeah," Sorrel eagerly nodded

I was surprised I had this one, I thought I'd have to go with "family"

Lu asked Sorrel if he liked being around him for more than just sneaking around.

"If I didn't like you, I wouldn't want to do any of this with you."

"Are you sure?"

"I am."

#WIPSnips #WritingPrompts #VeilOfStarlight

"There was a girl a few years ago who I thought would turn into something more. She was interested, but after a while I got to know her better and it just wasn't what I wanted."
"How did you figure that out?"
"She didn't like most of my jokes for one thing."
Lu snorted. "That's reason enough, you're a fucking delight to be around."
Sorrel chuckled. "And she had the inability to sit in silence... I like sitting in the quiet with you. Even when you're trying to flirt in the library without talking."
Lu frowned slightly, trying not to smile. He liked flirting with Sorrel in the library, too. He liked it more when he flirted back.
"She was a bit full of herself too," Sorrel added with a displeased frown and a short scoff. "Kept mentioning she was the Queen's fourth cousin, 'By blood even, not just marriage'. And I will be forever aggravated that she made that fucking fact stick in my brain."
"Ugh, I hate people like that." Lu rolled his eyes, stretching his legs out in front of him and leaning back on his hands. "Some people fucked and now you're related to someone important. Congratulations. You had everything to do with this wondrous development. You should be obscenely proud of yourself."
Sorrel laughed, louder than Lu had heard up to that point.
After a short pause, Sorrel sighed, adding, "And acted like she was doing me some kind of social favor by talking to me and nearly 'scandalizing herself' by having one dance together at some ball where the Queen could see her with a commoner...”
“Dancing with you in front of everyone would be the best night of my life,” Lu quietly told him.
Sorrel's heart skipped a beat. Lu was blushing again, softer than before, biting the corner of his lip as he smiled brightly back at him.
"I'm glad she wasn't smart enough to see what a treasure she had." Lu added, "Introduce us sometime so I can tell her that," he winked.

Lu gave Sorrel a matching necklace that has a pendant with the symbol for the goddess of love, family, and fertility. Lu left his behind when he ran away, but Sorrel kept them both. He wears the one Lu gave him all the time.

It's something like this, more in alt

#AwesomeCharacters #VeilOfStarlight

Simple art of a black heart with a vine with small flowers surrounding it.

Meant to represent the heart and soul of people in love being tied together with flowering vines.

A soulmate is forever so the soul is represented by the circle which is never ending.

The heart inside the circle represents love being sheltered/protected by the soul.

And the flowering vines are for fertility and love "blooming", but they also represent the emotional and metaphysical ties that bind the soul and heart together.

Sorrel smiled dumbly up at the roof of his tent. Only one side of his vision was clear, the other was fuzzy. But that didn't matter. He would have gladly gone blind for that. Permanent eye damage wasn't new to him anyway.
Lu's face came mostly into view with a proud, crooked grin. He fixed Sorrel's glasses (his vision came back fully into focus) before softly kissing him several times, cradling his face with his palm.

The next time Lu ran into Sorrel was surprisingly in the city library, funded by the Queen for research and open to the public with special permission. Lu had been recently granted total access, after proving he wouldn't burn any books by simply touching them. Before then he'd had to request books by title or subject and hope the librarian's assistant at that time would find what he wanted. And he had to read them within sight of the front desk while also wearing elbow-length leather gloves which made it nearly impossible to turn the pages.
Now that he was old enough to show 'proper discipline' over his magic, he could actually roam freely. Like he was incapable of controlling his own flames.
Alright, he sometimes wasn't, but that had only happened with a book once.
    Maybe twice…
They were his own books at any rate.
And he doubted the royal library had any smutty half-copper paperbacks anyway.

Torn between something cute and something sad. So I did both

1.) Lu made a deal with Nebula to switch clothes at a ball so he can sneak a dance with Sorrel and Lu's showing her his handiwork with her makeup

2.) Sid sees his reflection after a *long* time

#TBBPrompt #WritingPrompt #VeilOfStarlight

"Okay, close your eyes again," Lu told her, taking her shoulders and positioning her in front of the mirror hanging inside the door of his wardrobe. She sighed, waiting as Lu tied her veil in place with the ribbon high on her forehead. She could feel the shorter end that usually fell to her chest was folded back to keep her face more visible.
    "And… now."
She opened her eyes, her mostly flat expression immediately fell in shock. "I–?" She took several steps closer to the mirror, carefully inspecting her reflection. "Oh, th-that is me, holy shit."
She glanced at Lu before turning back to herself with a stunned scoff. "I…" She reached out and pulled him into a hug. "Thank you," she whispered.
"Thank you," he replied. With a proud grin, he gently took her elbow and opened his bedroom door, playfully presenting her to their brother and sister.
Nit gasped in excitement. Lu took a mock bow, Sid politely clapped with a crooked, playfully regal smile.
"C'mon, you need to go show off." Lu told her.
"And piss off Stella." Sid added, his smile growing genuine.
"A win-win." Neb lightly shrugged, snickering.
There wasn't any room for him to rest his hands, but he was desperately curious about what lay beneath the covered trays. He was unfortunately side-tracked by his reflection, brow rising in shock.

His eyes were almost too dim to make out in the weakly flickering flames of his face. Flames that were also darker than he remembered. He was nearly the flat gray of wet ash, no longer the heavy-cloud gray he expected. Or the soft gray of twilight he was named after.

Before he could lament or process how confinement had changed him physically, Tara motioned for the chefs to uncover their trays and he was immediately distracted. He didn't even notice the chefs leave as Tara dismissed them and the door closed.

Sid gets a view outside of the prison he's been in for an unknown amount of time. Winters in Atoria are longer and colder than he's used to, and if you go far enough north the winter never ends. At least if what Lu said about the isolated, war-mongering country is correct

#WIPSnips #VeilOfStarlight

The large window to his left wasn't rippled privacy glass like the washroom, and for the first time he could see what laid beyond the prison.
The wind blew hard, shaking snow from the thick conifers below.
"Where are we?" he asked without thinking, looking over the snow-covered, high-sloped mountain forest around them.
"Just south of central Atoria," she answered.
He wished he'd paid more attention to geography when he had a tutor as a child. He knew Nightfall inside and out after searching for Lu for several years, but he had almost no clue what the rest of the continent looked like. He remembered the view beyond the Nightfallen/Atorian border when he was in the back of a canvas-covered wagon, looking up through a small splitting seam. Were those the same mountains he was currently in? Or somewhere further in the country? How many mountain ranges laid between him and home?
They were at least three stories up if his comparison to Nightfall's capital castle was correct. The window didn't rattle, there was no draft as the trees bent in the wind and snow flurried wild enough to block the view for several seconds. He realized though his cell was downright frigid some nights, he rarely heard the wind. He could hardly hear it now.
