🇮🇸 🌪️ 💨 ⚠️

🆕 Update from #VeðurstofaÍslands from today, 15.10.2026 www.vedur.is/um-vi/fretti...

Lowest air pressure ever recorded in October

The storm on October 14 caused damage, although it is not considered among the worst October storms nationwide.

15.10.2026

Storm October 14, 2026
The depression was unusually deep. Air pressure fell rapidly and reached a low of 934.6 hPa at Fagurhólsmýri at 5 pm . This is the lowest air pressure ever recorded in October. The previous record was 938.4 hPa at Stórhöfði on October 19, 1963.

The air pressure also fell below the previous record at several stations in the south and east of the country: at Vatnsskarðshólar (935.0 hPa), Kirkjubæjarklaustur (935.6 hPa), Höfn in Hornafjörður (935.8 hPa), Önundarhorn (937.7 hPa), Teigarhorn (937.9 hPa) and at Kambanes (938.3 hPa).

One way to compare the strength and spread of severe storms is to look at the percentage of weather stations where wind speeds exceed 20 m/s. During the storm, wind speeds exceeded that limit at almost 40% of the country's stations. By that measure, the weather was not among the worst severe storms to hit the country in October.

The highest wind speed in the country was measured at 42.0 m/s at Stórhöfði. The highest gust was measured at 56.9 m/s at 7:20 at the Icelandic Road Administration station at Hvamm under the Eyjafjöll mountains.

The strong winds caused extensive damage in Siglufjörður. At the Icelandic Meteorological Office's weather station in Siglufjörður, the highest wind speed was measured at 20.9 m/s and gusts reached 40 m/s. Both wind speed and gusts have been recorded there in October. However, gusts have not been this high in Siglufjörður since October 2009.

The storm brought significant rainfall, especially in the East Fjords and Southeast Iceland, where the intensity of the rainfall was the highest. Precipitation was measured at nearly 70 mm from 8 am until noon in Neskaupstaður and Fáskrúðsfjörður.

The flooding was most noticeable in Vík í Mýrdal, where houses and roads were flooded.

As the day progressed, it got colder, as predicted, and snow fell in the mountains and also in many lowlands in the north.

🇮🇸 🌋 #Reykjanes - #Svartsengi 🟨

The #VeðurstofaÍslands has uploaded an 🆕 update

Situation on the Reykjanes Peninsula

Land uplift and magma accumulation continue

◉ Slow ground uplift continues at Svartsengi

◉ Seismic activity remains low

1/2

Deformation measurements show continued ground uplift in the Svartsengi area. Approximately four centimetres of uplift have been measured over the past three months, with the rate remaining relatively steady throughout this period.

The uplift indicates that pressure is still building at a depth of several kilometres.

The InSAR image above shows continued ground uplift at Svartsengi between 20 July and 13 September 2026. InSAR uses comparisons of satellite radar images to measure ground deformation. The black outlines mark lava fields formed during previous eruptions along the Sundhnúkur crater row and at Fagradalsfjall.

The image was produced using data from the TerraSAR-X satellite. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) provided the data through the GEO-GSNL initiative, supported by CEOS, an international forum for satellite-based Earth observation.Magma accumulation can continue for a long time
There is no evidence that the eruptive episode along the Sundhnúkur crater row is coming to an end. The Reykjanes-Svartsengi volcanic system remains at alert level 2, “Substantially increased activity” (orange).

Before the eruptive episode can be declared over, monitoring data must show clear evidence of this over an extended period.

The Volcano Alert Level System (VALS) is used by the Icelandic Meteorological Office to communicate information about activity in Iceland's volcanic systems.

The figure below shows the signs required before the alert level can be lowered. Once the volcanic system has been returned to alert level 0, the eruptive episode can be considered over.

Even if magma accumulation stops for several months, it may resume beneath Svartsengi. Eruptive episodes on the Reykjanes Peninsula can last for decades or centuries, with intervals between individual events. A long interval between eruptions therefore does not indicate that activity has ended

The #VeðurstofaÍslands / #IcelandicMetOffice is responsible for monitoring - but measurement-wise this distance is problematic, since data can only be taken from mainland Iceland ... and that's why the events on site are stronger than what the technology can show.

🇮🇸 🌧️ 🟨 🟧 🟥

The #VeðurstofaÍslands / #IcelandicMetOffice has announced an important update on its 🇮🇸 homepage - also worth noting for all #Icelandfans

🆕 landslide warning websites launched

Important addition to communicate more detailed infos regarding landslide risk

This is the complete English translation of the Icelandic text – way too long to use as ALT text, and currently, there isn't an official page in English either. From now on, please always go to the new website for landslides in English: https://gottvedur.is/skridur/en/

What I did find out from this, though, is that the earthquake display on the new homepage is unlocked

Here’s the direct link gottvedur.is/jardskjalfta... that you don’t need to remember and a picture showing how to get to this page without memorizing it
