Well played. I'm starting in the middle of the trilogy, and I'm able to easily keep up. There are a few back story items that I'd like more details on. For those, I do have the first book and hope to go back to it before I read the conclusion, but I don't think it's a requirement. From the beginning, Sawyer (little nuisance, petit diable, Sawwie(sp?)) Davvies is fighting her attractions even to the men she's already given herself to. One man is twisted, the other hot. I expected this to be wicked hot, and it didn't disappoint. 🌶 -- Book quote 'Forget possession. Pure obsession has taken over.' -- Tytus Tremblay Now, here's my quick take on our amorous, possessive men. Tytus (Ty) Tremblay definitely has some demons that he needs to exorcize before he can be worthy of Sawyer. His 🍆 piercings do have me overlooking a flaw or five. 🔥 And those moments they get lost in each other are... 🫦 ...dynamite. 💥 I think he's the hardest for me to come around to. The past haunts Mercer Eden, too, and when he gives into the darkness, I'm left wondering if Sawyer can forgive his mistake. He is definitely over-the-top even on a good day. I mostly find his antics hit my dark sense of humor. He does need a swift kick in the pants on occasion. Just be careful where you kick because those other skills are very yummy. The fact that he seems to be as fluid with his sexuality as Sawyer makes me like him a bit more. Noah Henry is the heart and provides a safe space for those he cares for. He's incredibly easy to like. Like everyone else, he has some ghosts that haunt him, but his sensitive nature calls to me. I'll be back. I need to see where this goes. I listened to the audio book. Of course, he's not the only one that has majorly misstepped, but he sets the tone, and others follow his lead. Does she forgive him a little too quickly? In my opinion, yes, but I'm a bit more jaded than Iris. I have similar feelings about others who change their attitude on a dime. That said, I appreciate that they see the err of their ways and am focusing more on that aspect. Taking it a step further are the folks who were kind regardless of what happened. I love that Linc also has a special bond with those people. He's such a sweet kid. PPD and child neglect (not originating from the same source) are topics covered to varying degrees. Not a lot of emphasis is put on them, but they are present. I listened to the audio book. The narrators, Chloe Ryan and Sean Masters, are wonderful and easy to listen to. I'm not going to finish that as it might give away too much. Everleigh, also known as Eden Coles as she tries to establish a new life, has been nothing more than a pawn throughout much of her life, be it her egg donor or the monster often referred to as her husband. I admire her strength to run and start anew. Regardless of what she's leaving behind, sometimes the best answer is to save yourself first. For as dark as this gets, it has sweet and loving moments that make it easy to enjoy. I love how Cassidy, Maverick, and other residents of Hawkthorpe welcome her with open arms, a hot meal, and a place to lay her weary body. They are a wonderful found family that she needs to help her heal and move forward. Of course, the attraction to Leo and Sterling Vale and Fletcher Wright helps even more. 🤭 They are all broken in their own ways, be it childhood trauma, loss of a loved one, or the sense of failure from a mission gone sideways. I love how the fueling of the chemistry between Everleigh and the three men allows them to see some of their truths and emerge on the other side stronger. The drama is a little overdone on an occasion or two, whether that is due to the writing, the narration, or a bit of both, I can't say for sure, but I did tune out that part a wee bit. As mentioned, I listened to the audio book. The narrators, Jake and Bridget Bordeaux, are good. There isn't much difference between the male voices, which makes it hard to keep track sometimes. I love how, after a small amount of time to adjust to their new reality, they embrace their pending parenthood and talk about what that looks like. Their personal struggles and how that influences some of their decisions making is also included. As much as I enjoy her family, someone needs to educate Grandma Ann on what is considered a gift, because that ranch doesn't qualify. 😂 Man, oh man, is that place the epitome of a fixer upper! While not a lot of emphasis is put on some of these, I love the acknowledgement of real society issues that are occurring, such as ICE raids and the impact on documented / legal migrant workers, droughts and water shortages, Big Ag versus small farmers, and more. These little touches make this feel even more realistic. I listened to the audio book. That and the banter between the friends keeps things entertaining. 😂 They are ridiculous in the best ways. Prior reading is encouraged but not required. Also, there are plenty of triggers, as things get hella dark on more than one occasion, so check those as there are more than are identified in this review. I listened to the audio book. The narrators, Theo Sinclair and Dane Anderson, are good choices for these two. Duet is, as usual, preferred, but I accept it isn't always an option, like here.
