October 16, 1942: The 28th transport left from #Westerbork for #Auschwitz. There were 1710 people (358 children) on this transport. Exactly 4 years later, ten of the leading Nazi war criminals from the Nuremberg Trials were hanged in a gymnasium of the Palace of Justice.

The train arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau on October 18. 116 women were admitted to the camp. The remaining people were murdered in the gas chambers. Only 30 people survived this transport.

Benjamin (7 years old) and his sister Jenny (5) were on this transport with their parents Louis van Dam (41) and Fanny van Dam-Wesly (38). From Camp Westerbork Louis and Fanny had written a postcard to friends in Groningen that Westerbork wasn't as bad as they had thought and thanking them for providing extra clothing and tokens for butter. Right before the transport Fanny wrote them again saying "We have to leave now, we hope to see you again." Fanny and the children were murdered in the gas chamber on arrival in Auschwitz and Louis, who was taken out at Cosel and put to slave labor, was murdered in December of that year in concentration camp Bobrek (a subcamp of Auschwitz-Monowitz where prisoners were used as slave labor to produce electrical parts for aircraft and U-boat submarines in the Siemens factory)
