The latest from #UKSGInsights: "Levelling the playing field: small European publishers, open access transition and the problem of scale" dub.sh/mENz2zS Greaser et al

Small publishers are vital to scholarly communication, particularly in the humanities and social sciences and in contexts that are poorly served by large commercial publishers. This study highlights the systemic inequities that small publishers face, emphasizing the imbalances between large and small publishers. To support the analysis, a mix of interview, focus group and case study data was collected from six European countries: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The small publishers report strong ideological and ethical alignment with open access (OA) principles. While most publishers interviewed see OA as an inevitable shift in scholarly publishing, they perceive the transition to be constrained by structural inequities of scale and systemic barriers in the publishing ecosystem. Each of the six countries in the study provides some support for small publishers; however, this support is unevenly distributed and does not adequately address the persistent inequities that small publishers face. There are few financially sustainable OA models available to small publishers. The study found that funding for small publishers is precarious, supportive policy is not comprehensive and that changing perceptions of the prestige of OA is essential. The authors make recommendations aimed at levelling the playing field for these publishers.

The latest from #UKSGInsights "The pivotal relationship between librarians and postgraduate researchers: a case study" by Siti Aisyah Binti Shamshun Baharin and @hannahcrago.bsky.social - dub.sh/j9uu3Rz

For the past decade, the relationship between librarians and postgraduate researchers (PGRs) has remained underexplored, despite its potential significance for research success and academic development. This case study examines how a former PGR and a librarian developed multiple partnerships through different avenues of engagement, resulting in a sustained professional relationship that enhanced both the PGR’s journey and the evolving role of the librarian. The article further highlights how such partnerships can foster academic excellence, research progression and mutual learning. It concludes with practical recommendations for higher education institutions seeking to strengthen the relationships between PGRs and librarians and to create a more supportive and impactful research environment.

The latest from #UKSGInsights: "Well‑being support and further education libraries: supporting the whole student" by @rhuski.bsky.social at @derbycollege.bsky.social dub.sh/ffB7USA

Abstract: Recent years have seen increased interest in well‑being support within academic libraries, yet UK further education (FE) libraries remain under‑researched in this area. This study, utilizing a cross‑sectional survey conducted in England in May 2025, collected 42 responses to explore the drivers, approaches, challenges and impact of student well‑being support in FE libraries. Analysis involved quantitative methods alongside content analysis of open‑ended questions. The findings indicate various drivers suggesting a non‑targeted strategy, frequently integrated with core services. While a wide array of approaches exists, collection‑based initiatives are most prevalent. Strong evidence of cross‑college partnership and initiative evaluation was found; however, this data often failed to demonstrate clear impact to senior leadership. Primary barriers include limited staff time and budgets, alongside difficulties in fostering engagement and promotion. These results largely align with broader academic library literature. Key recommendations emphasize adopting a strategic approach to well‑being that aligns with specific college priorities. Depending on available resources, libraries should prioritize demonstrating the impact of core services rather than overstretching by introducing initiatives beyond their primary scope. This ensures that well‑being support remains sustainable and relevant within the FE context.
