A Snippet of Dark Mode Document: A BROKEN REDEEMER, Chapter 1.

A tall man walked in, but he was blurry. I had to squint to make out any details about him. He wore a dark business suit and a pressed white button-down shirt, but no tie. I focused on his face and squinted harder. He had familiar blue eyes and a full head of dark brown hair that framed a pale face with sharp features, which changed the harder I squinted.

I knew him, but I couldn’t recall his name. He walked to me and held out a cloth. My brain said that I should accept nothing from him, but I didn’t understand why. Even being close, I couldn’t see him clearly. My eyes weren’t the problem. It was his aura. It was so dark that it obscured his face and, no matter how much I looked, I wouldn’t see any more details.

I tilted my head and took the cloth as a chair materialized out of thin air. He walked to it and sat as I curled up at the head of the bed and pressed the cloth to my nose.

He leapt up, scales growing from his forearm again as his skin mottled black, but the rest remained tan. I watched, hand inches from my knife, and waited for the right moment to strike.

“I like my women feisty. You should know this by now, Iliana.” He lunged again and propelled himself with Angelic speed. I manifested a silver staff, threw it up, and held firmly in both hands. The sword screeched as it hit the staff sending out sparks. “If only you were blonde.”

“We’re not here to talk about me. I’m here to talk about you,” I growled and shoved him back. He slid back a foot, planted both feet to stop himself, and flashed a grin. On anyone else, I would have called it dashing, but he made it awkward like having to kiss your cousin during spin the bottle.

“Pray tell, what have you learned about me?” he asked as I twirled the staff in my left hand. I took a slow deliberate step to the left, and he stepped to the right.

I let my subconscious slip into his mind and find the memories of that moment, feeling guilty for even daring it. He didn’t remember everything. The memory of me telling him to forget was gone. Everything was going to be fine. I pulled from his mind and stared at his eyes again.

“He’s a friend of my father. That’s all I’m going to say,” I replied, firm and unyielding.

We stared each other down, and I heard his thoughts: ‘She can’t think that she can keep him a secret forever. Why is she being stubborn?’

“I’m stubborn because you won’t understand, and you’re jealous,” I said, yanking my hand from his arm. He stared at me, and I shook my head.

I shook that off as I descended the nine steps into the pub. The bar on the left had nine stools, there were three booths along the opposite wall, and a few tables scattered throughout with a juke box that still worked in the farthest corner and a small space for a little dance floor. There was also a rec room off the side for those who liked to play pool and a table for poker. Though they weren’t allowed to gamble as he didn’t have a license. It didn’t stop them though, and he simply denied knowledge of it. Overall, it wasn’t anything special.

The second I ducked under the archway into the bar, the owner and regular bar tender beamed. He leaned on the bar and threw a towel over his shoulder.

“Look what the Cait Sídhe dragged in,” he said, and I sauntered over. “You been avoiding me?”

“Roger, actually. We’re divorced, and I’d rather not be where he might show up,” I said, leaning on the bar, showing off my décolletage and lacey bra in the button-down shirt. “He asked to meet me here though…”
