The movie Jumanji with Robin Williams employed this idea labori- ously and dramatically, with people going through walls into other times and places. That film also included perinatal elements such as stampedes of gigantic jungle animals and even floods. Hence, the movie depicts that going back into the womb can be quite negative, as we will see in the next few chapters. In Jumanji we see beasts that can devour or crush one, but also enveloping waters; these are all womb and birth symbols. In fact, when the flooding waters came through the wall, to accompany this element there was even the “mandatory” fight with a toothy beast! “Mandatory” because battles or fights in film always reflect our first “fight” and struggle — that is, to be born. The prevalence of battles, wars, and fights in film only highlights the importance of birth in the psychic “economy” of our societies and cultures. We have, also, the Stargate series of movies and TV programs. They all depict a round, membrane-like portal through which one goes to another faraway world where dangers are faced and adventures are to be had. In the initial Stargate movie, one plot element that stands out is the trepidation and dread that the journeyers express about going through the membrane barrier for the first time. Breaking out of prisons, being rescued from tight, enclosing places or situations in which one is not free — that is, cannot “move freely” — are specific portrayals of the birth process itself. Contemporary film is flooded with plots and scenes depicting such escapes and/or rescues. Any constricting surround is a womb symbol, including oppressive social and political conditions from which one cannot escape and under which one is not able to move freely, to enjoy “freedom”; especially regimented ones under which one is tortured, processed, and treated anonymously and in an unfeeling, insensitive manner.

Nonetheless, the basis even of these goes further back. It all begins in infancy, even as a neonate, where one, upon coming out of the womb, discovers one’s needs are not going to be adequately attended to. They will not be very well noticed. You will not be all that important to “them.” Not as important as you should be, if you were to get your needs satisfied and to thrive. Since the definition of being loved is having one’s needs taken care of, you will not feel loved for who you are. Yes, going back even to the time of birth this is true. And even prior to that — in the womb and especially during the time of fetal malnutrition, where we found ourselves suffocating and starving — we feel an outside world has turned on us and is attacking us, hardly supporting and “loving” us for who we are. With that deprivation and those feelings of being unseen and unloved in place already by the time of infancy, it is only a matter of more time, then, before one will begin to turn that into, “I cannot be loved for who I am, so who should I be, then?” These are the philosophic bands that arise at birth, importantly including the prime directives of life — “Who am I?” and “Who to be?” One’s earlier human nature and innate Divinity were forgotten in the trauma of birth, leaving one an Ego — one that is blank, a tabula rasa.1 And upon that blank slate will be imprinted the behaviors and the messages from those behaviors that one gets from one’s parents, especially one’s mother. When you say rojo and you indicate an item that is the color red, I also share an understanding with you. The same kind of understandings about common biological experiences occur across cultures as well. Having experienced birth, child-“rearing,” pain, death and loss of loved ones, joy of achievement, pleasure of sexuality, friendship, separation and love, and so on, I have a common ground with another human ... with any other human. For we have all, more or less, experienced these things. It is on the basis of experience, held in common by all humans, that I build my theories. Those are the closest to any brute facts which might exist in our human reality. They are biologically constituted realities for humans, mixing with culture to create our bioculturally constituted facts.

Culture is Our Template for Understanding So, you see, culture is the set of understandings and everything related to them that is shared in common by a group. Not So “Happy Days”: The War-Born Generation — Fifties, Eisenhower Generation The media tends to focus on the big trends and to ignore or miss the lesser ones. The way our recent history was portrayed, you would think that just because there was a huge number of babies born in the decade and a half after World-War-Two’s end — the much discussed Baby- Boomer Generation — that there were no babies born during the War ... almost as if every man in America was overseas fighting or that, when home on leave or whatever, they simply would not or could not conceive! Marinated in the Womb of War Fears However, of course these ridiculous notions are not true, so there is a pre–Baby-boomer Generation who happened to be born during or in the decade leading up to WWII, that is to say, between about 1925 and 1942. And the Yuppies were predominantly the sons and daughters of this — let us call it — Fifties Generation. Whatever it is, it would necessarily be Truth, or truths, far beyond what we come up with enslaved as we are within the boundaries of concepts formed from our early, our profoundly influential, experiences. An example? What is the reality we experience before we have the one of duality when we come into Form as cells, as sperm and ovum? When we experience not just separation, from father and mother, but then duality in the coming together of the two at conception? At that point we have laid — through the experiences we have had there of duality — a foundation for seeing all the rest of the Reality we will experience in life in terms of male and female, separation and union, struggle and peace, pleasure and pain, satisfaction and discontent, inner and outer, and all the rest. At first we were practicing our new skill of keeping our “chins up” (old chum) only in water. Eventually, for other reasons we found it helpful to be bipedal on land as well. These included keeping one’s hands and arms available for carrying an infant, for with our loss of hair ... oh, did I fail to mention that? ... yes, we lost our hair like all other mammals who go out to sea ... and I assure you, we were not the first. Anyway, with our loss of hair, infants could no longer hold onto fur, as our primate relatives do. Furthermore, with humans being born more helpless than our cousins and staying that way for a longer period of time after birth, our very young ones were not developed enough to cling anyway. We’ll get into that shortly, with prematurity of birth and secondary altriciality.
