A change of scenery for a couple of months! 🌵

I’ve joined @uarizona.bsky.social’s Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research as an Agnese N. Haury Fellow, exploring Greenland junipers and what they reveal about Arctic climate variability. 🌲❄️

Heartwood Hollow
An ancient tree reveals a lifetime written in rings, fractures, scars, and weathered grain.

A close, tightly framed view fills the image with the exposed interior of an enormous, weathered tree trunk. Broad growth rings radiate outward from an irregular dark hollow near the center, creating sweeping circular patterns across warm brown heartwood and pale gray outer wood. Deep black cracks follow and cross the rings, some spreading like narrow veins toward the edges. The upper portion is heavily decayed and splintered, with rough cavities, broken fibers, small twigs, and bits of dried plant material caught in the crevices. Along the lower right, thick knotted wood bulges into the frame with rugged, almost sculptural folds. The contrast between smooth saw-like grain, jagged fractures, soft erosion, and dense knots gives the trunk extraordinary tactile detail. Muted tans, browns, charcoal blacks, and silvery grays dominate the natural palette, while soft, even light emphasizes every fissure and contour. ☀️Did you know an ancient #solarstorm was recorded in tree rings? Panyushkina et al. found evidence for the event. Learn more from their dataset and article at doi.org/10.25422/azu... and doi.org/10.1038/s432.... Image: Panyushkina et al. (2024) CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 #OpenData #OpenScience #TreeRings

Two-panel scientific figure showing radiocarbon data and geographic sampling locations for a solar event around 660 BCE. Panel A is a scatter plot of radiocarbon concentration (Delta 14C in per mil) versus years BCE (685 to 630 BCE), showing a sharp upward spike around 664 to 663 BCE across multiple tree species including Altai larch, Yamal larch, Choukai cedar, German oak, and Vistula oak. Panel B is a satellite map of Eurasia displaying the geographic locations where these tree samples were collected across Central Europe, Inner Eurasia, Northern Eurasia, and Pacific North Asia.

Ancient trees may hold clues about the next enormous solar storm.
