Sauron has just been overthrown at the end of the Second Age. Isildur has cut the Ring from his hand, and Elrond and Círdan are telling him to throw it in the fire that day. He kept it for two years.

The Doom of the Noldor. Fëanor's Elves have just killed their own kin to seize ships and are leaving Valinor to chase Morgoth. He hardened his heart and marched on. The battle that fulfilled it was named for this line: Unnumbered Tears.

The Value of Mithril, in four plates: the Doors of Durin, the vein the Dwarves knelt to, the thing they woke digging for it, and a hobbit asleep in Rivendell in a shirt worth more than the Shire.

Eärendil the Mariner in four plates: the star at the helm, the jewel driving Vingilot through the fog, the choice on the rocks he made against his own heart, and the same light three ages later in a hobbit's fist.

What Happens When a Maia Dies, in four plates: the shadow that could not rebuild, the hands that never healed, the fall that came back, and the one who simply walked home.

Doriath exists because a king stopped walking in a forest. Thingol saw Melian standing under the black trees of Nan Elmoth, and by some accounts neither of them moved for years, under starlight alone, long before the sun or moon.

The Fellowship is walking through the dark of Moria, and Gandalf is explaining why the Dwarves abandoned their greatest city. They woke something. Nobody in the company knew what Durin's Bane was, Gandalf included. He found out on the bridge.

Where hobbits came from, in four plates. Tolkien never wrote their origin, so these are the record: an Ent who cannot find them in the old lists, a shadow on a forest and a move west, reed boats on the Gladden, and a bridge into the Shire.

The Council of Elrond, where the plan to carry the Ring into Mordor and destroy it is being argued. Erestor, Elrond's own chief counsellor, has just called it the path of despair. This is Gandalf's reply.

Eärendil, half Elf and half Man, has sailed to the Undying Lands to ask the Valar for help against Morgoth. Mortals were forbidden to land, so he told his crew to stay aboard and take the risk alone. Elwing followed anyway. This is his welcome.

At the west door of Moria a thing in the lake has just seized Frodo and sealed the Fellowship inside the mountain. This is Gandalf's answer. What he kept to himself: of the nine of them, it had reached for Frodo first.

The Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Two High Kings marched on Mordor together and neither came home. Seven years at the foot of Barad-dur, and it still came down to one man standing at a fire.

#tolkien #tolkienart #tolkienfan

The siege of Barad-dur lasted seven years.

Not a battle. Seven years of an army living on the ash beneath that tower.

He then carries him up the side of a volcano. The book does not make a moment of it.

Elendil left Numenor with nine ships, seven seeing-stones and a sapling of the White Tree, and spent the rest of his life at war over what was left.

Four from the episode.
