The array is illuminated by a plane wave incident at the Bragg angle πœƒ=πœ†/(2π‘Ž), where a is the lattice period (waveguide spacing) and πœ† is the optical wavelength. As shown in the inset, this excitation corresponds to a uniform intensity profile combined with a linear phase gradient, featuring a πœ‹/2 phase shift between adjacent waveguides.
