#TimeTravelAuthors Day 17
From Charlotte's Story(WIP):
Mom got us some popcorn without me asking. She knew that once I’d skip back in time to the 16th century, the choice of treats would be much more limited. They didn’t even have chocolate yet.

#wip 'Unfold'

'Unfold' was devised as a female-centric story, so the majority (if not all) characters are women. The story touches on the lives of many generations of women in a family.

Practically, changing perspective would require changing the time travel device.

Even days are for posting whatever!“You still owe me some explanations,” I remark. “You said you’re from another universe? What’s this universe like?”
“It’s a world in which magic is common and dragons roam,” Sabrina responds. She snaps her fingers, and a little fire appears, dancing in her palm.
It sounds too good to be true. Could it really be that the fantasy books I’ve read and the games I’ve played have some truth to them? I’ve often fantasised of such things, but I never truly believed it. And yet Sabrina’s notebook has me baffled; even if she is lying, something still has to be true. No magic trick would be able to conjure up such a perfect replica of my notebook so quickly, could it?
And why shouldn’t magic be allowed to exist? The laws of physics are created to describe as accurately as we can how the world works. If something breaks them, then it’s the laws that need to be changed to match the results. That’s how it’s supposed to work.
“Prove it to me,” I say, although at this point, I don’t know that I need any more proof of magic. My tone is initially half serious, although that façade quickly fades and turns to excitement and childish glee. “Show me this world you come from. I want to see dragons!”
“Fine,” she says. “Follow me. I’ll show you the portal I came through. Then tomorrow, I’ll bring you through to my world.”With a pained expression in his eyes, the doctor picks up the gun from the table.
I hear the muffled pow of a gunshot as he turns around and shoots Gem in the chest. She sits there in confusion for a moment or two, unmoving and bleeding out.
My vision is very blurry now, and I feel on the brink of death. I try to think through the brain fog.
If I’m going to die, then so be it, but I won’t just lie here while this psycho doctor shoots people. Adrenaline now coursing through my body, I rip out the tube attached to my arm. Gem slowly turns to lie face down on the bed right beside me. I reach for her, but my arm seems to pass right through her and I roll over onto my stomach.
For a moment I wonder if she vanished, but no, she’s just on the other side of me. I painfully push myself up and reposition myself to be sitting on the side of the bed. I stare as the pool of blood from where she was shot trickles upward towards me, towards the wound in my chest. What is going on?
The doctor sets something down that emits a dim glow, and points the gun at me. I hear a whap as something tugs me forward. I feel searing pain for a moment, and then nothing. The blood on my chest is gone and even my dress looks intact. How – ?“Wait outside,” Harriet tells me before I come in. “Lock the door. The code is 149767. Then hide.”
I see a look of relief mixed in with the anxiety on Harriet’s face. I close the door and enter the code. I try the door. It’s still unlocked. I watch Harriet’s face go from horror back to relief as I close the door again. I’m in reverse, so maybe… I enter 767941. I try the door again. This time, it’s locked. She reversed the code for me, but this time, it would’ve been more helpful if she hadn’t.
Then I find a place to hide.
***
I sit there, patiently, waiting for something to happen. After what must have been hours, someone finally walks by. A masked figure, who presses a button on the vault door and opens it. Harriet hastily retreats from the door, looking angered. The figure enters the room with her, then closes the door.
I play through what I just watched in reverse. Did that person just leave and lock Harriet in the room behind them? How awful! At least I’ll be there to rescue her. God, I left her in there for hours, didn’t I? But then, what could I have done differently? And then when I tried the door and it was still unlocked, she must’ve thought I was there to save her, and then immediately shut the door in her face. I’m sorry, Harriet.

#TimeTravelAuthors Oh crap, he thought. Coming in here had seemed like such an obvious trick — why hadn’t he realized that it would be obvious to more than one person? Maybe if he held very still, Hance wouldn’t see him. This would be such a bad place to get cornered.

I smiled. "I think handsome men are treated well in every time period."

He shook his head, chuckling. "You know what I mean. People from the Middle East. Or people with dark skin."

I considered. "Of course you'd be welcome at Judson Memorial. Reverend Judson's parents were missionaries in Burma. He was born there." I gazed at the armrest in the car door. "But I'm afraid that some people…probably even in the church…might think you're a foreigner because of how you look. And some people don't care for foreigners."

D17. Fletcher didn’t see it like that. He blamed Symmonds for his friend’s death and an altercation behind a pub in Holborn quickly turned physical. Symmonds expected an easy victory by virtue of superior height, longer reach and an arsenal of dirty tricks up his sleeve.

There was a knock on the door. I looked at Tonio who shrugged. “Do you want me to get that?”
“No, I'm already on my feet.” I turned the porch lights on and opened the door. Outside stood what I could only describe as an ageless man. He was dressed in a dark blue suit like a businessman on a London street, which made him look slightly uncomfortable. He didn't look Mexican or like a tourist.
“_Buenas noches_, can I help you?” I asked.
“I was told you were interested in going to Bolivia?” the man offered in English. “I'm Bron.”

‘Instead of getting all worked up and blaming yourself for something you clearly cannot control, maybe...’ his voice trailed off. I snuffled into my tissue. ‘You know you can’t force timing, and you are after all hearing me all right, aren't you?’
I nodded. I hadn't thought of that.
‘There are a lot more factors to this than you know. Much more than just you and 'unknown' in this equation. Why don't you just try to enjoy being somewhere else right now? Treat it like a holiday?’
“But Peluche, I don't know how!” I cried. “I can't relax until I know what I am doing and that I can do it... ”
‘Let me tell you a secret, then. They are still debating how to best go about this, the best approach to bridge across you on our timeline, to those who might be interested in what they have learnt. Relax. You are not doing anything wrong.’
“You are sure I'm not screwing this up?”
‘Positive.’ He head-butted my knee. ‘You've stopped crying. I think I deserve some treats for that, don't you?’

Happy Saturday, #timetravelauthors! In today's #tricky excerpt, Therese (a blind, aquatic humanoid alien) and Demi (an insect living in a deceased human body) discuss nail varnish.

#writingcommunity #writingprompts

“I don’t like the smell,” the girl complained.Therese laughed. Actually, she hadn’t known Demi had a sense of smell. They were learning more about each other every day. “You should smell it underwater. Leave it to dry for a few minutes, and it’ll fade. How’s it looking?”“I can’t get it even,” Demi told her. “Does everyone in the Accord do this every day, like you?”“No, of course not. I’m just funny like that. Lots of people go without.”“Do you…?” the girl asked. “That is, how do you…?”“How do I see what I’m doing?” Therese smiled. “Nail varnish is thick enough that I can use my implant to detect where I’m putting it. Picking colours can be tricky, but I’ve learned what works well with my skin tone.”“Does Captain Miriham wear this?”“You know, I couldn’t say. I haven’t sensed or smelled it on her, but I haven’t exactly been looking that hard. I’ll have to check. If you don’t like it, you shouldn’t force yourself. If a boy overlooks you because of the colour of your nails, sweety, he’s not worth the time.”
