One of the great things about #TidyTuesday is that one day you can be playing with data on avocado oil authenticity, and the next learning all about frogs and toads 🐸

So here's a quick map of the presence of frogs and toads across European countries 🗺️

#RStats #DataViz #ggplot2

Small multiples choropleth map series of Europe showing where 14 frog and toad species are present across European countries. Each mini-map highlights countries in green where a species occurs and gray where it does not. The main message is that frogs and toads are widespread across Europe, but species distributions vary considerably: the Eastern Tree Frog is found in only 10 countries, while the Common Toad is the most widespread, present in 36 countries.

The tree branches into three major color-coded orders radiating from a shared ancestor: Gymnophiona (caecilians) in purple at the top, Caudata (salamanders and newts) in orange in the middle section, and Anura (frogs and toads) forming the largest green clade along the bottom. Individual taxonomic families and key clades are labeled at the tips of each branch, illustrating the evolutionary relationships and relative family diversity across the three amphibian orders.A four-panel scientific grid analyzing amphibian diversity in Central Africa against distance from historical Pleistocene forest refugia in kilometers. Panel A plots species richness, showing a strong negative linear relationship (R-squared = 0.71) where species richness decreases significantly as distance from historical refugia increases. Panel B plots phylogenetic diversity, displaying a matching steep negative trend (R-squared = 0.75). Panel C plots relative phylogenetic diversity with a moderate negative trend (R-squared = 0.56). Panel D plots phylogenetic endemism, showing a weak relationship (R-squared = 0.09). Each panel features a spatial map of Central Africa above its scatter plot, illustrating highest species concentration clustered directly within historical forest refugia zones.

AmphibiaWeb has written accounts for 233 of the 1,170 native frog species it lists for Brazil (20%). A 15-square grid, one per country with at least 250 native species, runs from the largest list to the smallest; each square's area shows the number of native species, and a burgundy fill rising from the bottom shows the share with an account. In 13 of the 15 countries, the share sits between 18% and 30%; Madagascar (274 of 441, 62%) and Australia (221 of 258, 86%) stand apart. An account means a description, life-history, or distribution text on AmphibiaWeb; a missing account does not mean a species lacks published research. Species found in several countries count in each list, so lists cannot be added together. Introduced occurrences and 31 species with ambiguous country codes are excluded. Catching up on last week's #TidyTuesday data about avocado oils 🥑

Obviously I had to make an avocado (pie?) chart 📊

#RStats #DataViz #ggplot2

Pictogram chart titled "Holy Guacamole! Your avocado oil probably isn’t real." highlighting widespread fraud in the avocado oil market, where 89% of tested products failed authenticity testing according to a 2026 UC Davis study. The chart uses three avocado illustrations to represent passing rates, where the size of the brown avocado pit corresponds to the percentage of products that passed testing. Only 29% of tested mayonnaise passed authenticity testing, shown by a large pit; only 7% of tested chips passed, represented by a small pit; and none of the tested salad dressings passed, depicted by an avocado with no pit.

This week's #TidyTuesday is about avocado oil authenticity. In a 2026 UC Davis study, 48 of 54 foods labelled "made with avocado oil" were not authentic. Of 20 olive oil products, 19 were authentic.

Code: https://github.com/gkaramanis/tidytuesday/tree/master/2026/2026-week_41

A Sankey diagram under the title "Nearly 9 in 10 "avocado oil" foods aren't avocado oil". The subtitle says that in a 2026 UC Davis study, 48 of the 54 chips, mayonnaises and salad dressings labelled "made with avocado oil" were not authentic, and 19 of the 20 products made with olive oil were authentic. Flows run from three product categories on the left (salad dressing, mayonnaise and chips) through the oil on the label in the middle (olive oil and avocado oil) to the test result on the right (authentic and not authentic). Every bar and flow is split into green for authentic and orange for not authentic. Chips is the largest category with 38 products, 28 of them made with avocado oil and 26 of those not authentic. Mayonnaise and salad dressing have 18 products each. All 12 salad dressings made with avocado oil were not authentic, and 10 of the 14 mayonnaises. A large "89%" sits on the flow from avocado oil to not authentic, and a small "95%" on the flow from olive oil to authentic.

Two TidyTuesday figures in Typst.
On the open map, Lille looks like it has seven times the pharmacies of Paris.
It doesn't. It was just mapped more fully.
And two fatty acids are enough to spot a fake avocado oil.

A lollipop chart with 20 rows, one per French city, sorted from top to bottom by pharmacies per 100,000 people. Each row has a green stem from zero ending in a pill emoji at the city's value, with the value written beside it. From the pill to a dashed vertical line at 29.5, labelled France, the row is filled with a light diagonal hatch. A right-hand column gives the share of people who live within 1 km of a pharmacy. Lille is at the top in bold, at 16.3 per 100,000 with 60% within 1 km. Bordeaux follows at 10.9 and 46%, then Tours at 8.0 and Strasbourg at 6.2. Most cities sit between 2 and 5. Paris, also in bold, is near the bottom at 2.3 with 23% within 1 km, below Lyon at 2.3 and above Marseille at 2.0, Nancy at 1.8 and Nice at 1.0. No city reaches the national line.A scatter plot on a graph-paper grid. The horizontal axis is linoleic acid from 0 to 70% of fatty acids and the vertical axis is palmitoleic acid from 0 to 10%. Each bottle is drawn as an emoji. Sixteen avocado emoji, the bottles judged pure, cluster at the top left between about 10 and 19% linoleic and 4 and 9% palmitoleic, almost all inside a stippled green box labelled typical avocado oil. Three sunflower emoji, the suspected sunflower or safflower blends, sit just below them at the same linoleic values but with palmitoleic between 0.6 and 2%, labelled R1 refined at 0.44 dollars per fluid ounce, U4 with no grade at 0.47 dollars and U5 with no grade at 0.79 dollars. A note says their linoleic looks normal but their palmitoleic is too low. Far to the right, past a dashed line at 50% linoleic labelled soybean oil, three bean emoji are stacked near 55% linoleic, spread between 0 and 2% on the vertical axis only so each can be read, although all three measure 0.1% palmitoleic. They are labelled EV3 extra virgin at 0.65 dollars, EV6 extra virgin at 0.49 dollars and U6 with no grade at 0.34 dollars.

#TidyTuesday Week 40: Avocado Oil Authenticity

If future researchers wanted to do a panel of fatty acids/sterols to quickly assay for authenticity, which ones should they use? It's pretty consistent across oils and "avocado" oil-containing foods.

My submission for #TidyTuesday, Week 40 on Avocado Oil Authenticity. I explore a combination of fatty acid and sterol profiles to identify pure avocado oil in 2020 bottled oil examination.

Code: github.com/mitsuoxv/tid...

Scatter plot; x-axis is palmitoleic acid in total fatty acids, y-axis is beta-sitosterol in total sterols, and points are classified into 3 categories (pure, suspected, or adulterated).

Unit chart titled 23 of 27 tested avocado-oil products failed authenticity testing in both tested lots. Each circle is one product, split into two halves for its two separately purchased lots; burgundy halves failed and outlined beige halves passed, where failure means a fatty-acid and sterol profile inconsistent with authentic avocado oil. Chips: 12 of 14 failed both lots, and two had one failing lot each. Mayonnaise: 5 of 7 failed both; two products passed both lots and share label wording, size, price, and purchase channel. Salad dressing: all 6 failed both. A caption notes that the results do not show how much avocado oil was present, are not a food-safety verdict, describe only the tested products, and do not identify responsible suppliers. Data: Wang Lab, UC Davis.
