October 17, 1989 - The Blazers acquired 11-year veteran forward Robert Reid from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Richard Anderson.

#RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

After 10 years with the Houston Rockets, Reid was traded in July, 1988 to the Hornets for former Blazer Bernard Thompson. After averaging 32 minutes per game the previous nine seasons, Reid's playing time and averages dropped dramatically before the trade to Charlotte. "I'm elated," said Reid. "It's a new lease on life, once again."

In Charlotte, Reid played all 82 games, averaged 26 minutes and 14.7 points. "When I came to Charlotte, I was able to show people I could still come in and put points on the board. Now, coming to Portland, it's a new chance for me."

A major contributor to two Rocket teams that made the NBA Finals (1981 and 1986), Reid is looking to provide Portland the same opportunity. "I'm going out there and try to win this thing."

Anderson played two season with the Blazers, averaging 6 points and 4 rebounds in nearly 18 minutes per game. "Richard wanted to play more minutes than he played last year," said Blazers coach Rick Adelman. "As a coaching staff, we didn't see that much playing time for him." With the trade, the seven players that played the most minutes from the bench are all gone. Photo, no description

"I went up in the air to shoot a jump hook and felt like someone hit me in the leg with an ax," Bowie later recalled, adding, "I heard it snap and it felt like it did the last time I broke it." Bowie later said he stood in one position for what felt to be 30 seconds, before telling Steve Johnson and Clyde Drexler, "I think I just broke my leg."

Not wanting to be carried off on a stretcher in front of the home crowd, Bowie had teammates Johnson and Jerome Kersey carry him to the locker room. Bowie was soon taken to the hospital, where it was discovered he had suffered a hairline fracture of his right tibia, the same leg that he broke the year before.
