Watched #TheSunNeverSets starring Dakota Fanning, and her boyfriend is the most obnoxious character I’ve seen in ages. That dumb ass annoyed me the entire movie😭

The bad news is that Joe Swanberg’s THE SUN NEVER SETS regrettably recycles That Subplot from SPORTS NIGHT. The good news is that it somehow turns All-American Nice Guy Jake Johnson into a sociopath.

#TheSunNeverSets moviemanifesto.com/2026/09/labo...

The Sun Never Sets is the work of Joe Swanberg, the mumblecore pioneer who here operates with a welcome baseline of visual professionalism. (Coincidentally, he had a small role in You’re Next.) The Alaskan locations look beautiful, providing a pointed contrast to the ugliness of the characters. Fanning imbues her heroine with a bristling volatility, but while Wendy isn’t wholly blameless in this disaster, she also seems caught between two dudes who are constantly battling for the title of Absolute Worst. Chuck, despite (or because of?) his natural good looks, is a complete asshole, alternately possessive and dismissive. For his part, Jack might be a true sociopath, repeatedly manipulating Wendy while crying foul whenever she exhibits the slightest degree of agency; Johnson, one of American media’s most preternaturally nice guys, warps his inherent charisma with disturbing ease and conviction.

New piece: Because I care about you, the reader, I reviewed *four* different movies that came out on Labor Day Weekend. They provide quite the range of genre—and of quality, too.

The characters in #TheSunNeverSets are complicated, flawed, and messy and that is what makes them so relatable.

With her engaging, complex performance in the new romantic dramedy #TheSunNeverSets, #DakotaFanning further embellishes an acting career that began when she was a kid in the early 2000s. I review the movie & give Fanning her due in @TheVoiceSF.bsky.social: #SFBAFCC

Dakota Fanning & Jake Johnson star in The Sun Never Sets — Joe Swanberg's return to mumblecore filmmaking after nearly a decade away. Quietly affecting in places, annoyingly vague in others. #TheSunNeverSets #DakotaFanning #JakeJohnson #MovieReviews
