The Skyhook was the opposite of a parachute. Also called the Fulton Surface-to-Air Recovery System, a payload (or unfortunate person) would send up a balloon on a cord, which would be hooked by a plane passing overhead, yanking them off the ground and into the air, and eventually winched onto the plane. As insane as it sounds, it was successfully used in multiple military operations, and most famously depicted in the movie The Dark Knight.
