Looking forward to the publication of my second book next month that examines the legacies of women’s suffrage for education and youth activism for women’s rights in the 1920s and 1930s! www.barnesandnoble.com/w/daughters-...

Oct 10, 1911: California voters passed the amendment giving women the right to vote (nine years before #19thAmendment). www.sos.ca.gov/elections/ce...

Suffragists celebrating in Los Angeles, via the Los Angeles Herald (Oct 1911): cdnc.ucr.edu?a=d&d=LAH191... #suffrage #womenshistory

A screen capture of the Los Angeles Herald (October 13, 1911) shows the front page above the fold. The central b/w photo is a group of cheering suffragists at Choral Hall (in the now-gone Philharmonic Auditorium) just after the Herald staffer brought news that “suffrage had surely won.” Initial reports on the evening of October 10th didn’t look good for the suffrage amendment in California. Suffrage lost in San Francisco and barely won in Los Angeles. Suffragists began to brace themselves as they prepared for a new campaign. It was the votes from California’s rural and inland counties that tipped the scales. According to one of the headlines, “Majorities Rolled up By Inland Counties.”

Marie Bottineau Baldwin was an attorney and advocate for women voting. This plaque honors her. As some Republicans push rescinding the 19th Amendment or enacting "household voting," we must redouble efforts to protect the rights of women and individuals to vote. #elections #suffrage #vote #politics

In 1893 on #ThisDayInHistory, #NewZealand became the first country to grant all women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. It was still racist for a while, as #Maori and European-descended elections were separate, but it was still a major win for #suffrage and #feminism.

On this day in 1870, Louisa Ann Swain became one of the first women in the U.S. to cast a vote legally – after 1807.

Some women in New Jersey did vote in the late 17- and early 1800s. 🧵
