The cross bars close to its top are a common feature on lamp posts which once supported gas-powered lamps, and they were there to support the ladders used by lamplighters, or leeries as they were known in Glasgow, to light the lamps each night.

An old lamp post at the top of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's Sixty Steps in the West End of Glasgow. Made by McCulloch and Co., it seems likely it dates back to the 1870s when the steps were built.
