A great haunted house movie that is basically a mystery movie. A great plot twist at the conclusion is the cherry on top. A movie making rule of thumb I’ve discovered is that if George C. Scott was involved, it has to be good.

Guillermo del Toro created a superior sequel to the first superhero/horror film from the Marvel universe by creating a truly terrifying addition to movie vampire lore. Snipes is at his best.

A now classic reimagining of vampire horror films that really works despite one key jumpscare that doesn’t quite work upon multiple viewings. The excellent cast really carries the day.

Guillermo del Toro created a film that perfectly blurs the line between dark fantasy and even darker historical fiction. Is the ending happy or tragic? It is entirely up to the viewer.

Easily Craven’s oddest horror film. Meant to capitalize upon the human fear of advancing technology, it is just silly and ridiculous. If you’re into #SoBadItsGood movies, especially those directed by good directors, this is for you.

This film is arguably the beginning of Hollywood’s exploration of the language of horror filmmaking in the sound era. A few sequences are a little awkward or overwrought, but Karloff’s powerful performance STILL works.

An unofficial remake of The Black Hole that works much better by going WAY harder. It defies two stereotypical plot points of horror filmmaking very deliberately and it’s wonderful. The loss of a truly hardcore scene to the studio suits hurts.

A VERY bad idea that was poorly executed. Akroyd delivers a bizarre horror/comedy film that fails to make any kind of sense. Chevy Chase’s standard uninspired performance sinks it altogether.

Fincher’s masterful, pitch dark crime drama/thriller goes straight for your jugular and doesn’t let go. Deeply disturbing, terrifying. It delivers one of the most iconic endings in horror films. Impeccably cast and executed.

A truly bizarre 70s horror film that is genuinely #SoBadItsGood. It has to be seen to be believed. On top of that, IT’S A REMAKE of a 1950s horror exploitation film that’s equally demented and has vanished into the realm of lost media.

Dante continued the Gremlins IP in the only way possible, by turning it into a now classic horror/comedy film. A genuinely funny jab at creature features and NYC in the 1980s. Tony Randal steals the show as the voice of the Brain Gremlin.

A daring attempt to take the Halloween movie franchise in another direction that should have worked given the quality of this film. Genuinely inventive and scary.

A 1987 horror/comedy film for kids that pushed the boundaries of what such films could get away with in terms of violence and actually frightening sequences. It is appealing because it has no pretentions about what audience it’s for.

The best revision of the Zombie Apocalypse horror genre so far. Shakycam action sequences actually work to great effect. The pandemic aftermath plot is compelling. The fast zombies are TERRIFYING.

It’s not pretentious if you actually pull it off. A deep dive into the deeply disturbed mind of a serial killer who has an elaborate modus operandi. JLo is surprisingly convincing and D’Onofrio is at the top of his game.
