John and Briar!! I'm working on eventually getting them a story!

Briar is a shapeshifter, but she is always solid black with only her eyes and mouth/teeth showing as white.

John is just a normal human lol

Briar is Chaotic Neutral to Johns Lawful Good

Lu wobbled when he took another step, but pressed on, listing sideways with his next unsteady step. The only thing that stopped him from falling was John grabbing his free arm to catch him.
Gods damn it all…
"Are you hurt?" John asked, holding tight to his arm as he looked him over. Thankfully injuries on Lu would be quickly obvious, especially in the dark.
"N-no," he shook his head, still breathing hard. "Just m-my fuckin' chest," he lividly snapped.
"Ah, well, that's fine then," John snickered as he slipped his arm around Lu's back to hold him steady. Lu weakly chuckled as John guided him further up the path toward the Quarter-Master's wagon. John sat him on a barrel and gave his shoulders a reassuring squeeze.
"Oh-! Good gods, Briar!" John quietly snapped, half-laughing at his casually-naked wife when she appeared. He jerked off his shirt and shoved it at her.
She scoffed. "You know this won't fit m–"
"You can make yourself smaller! Cover yourself!" He interrupted in a harsh whisper, holding it over her chest.
"You do realize I–?"
"I am aware you are a shadow. I do not care!"
Briar snorted, indulging her husband and holding the far too small garment over her torso that was already modestly hidden by her rolling black form. "He's fine, by the way," she added, disappointed.
"I figured. The man lost an arm once." John scoffed.
"What happened?" Briar asked Lu.
Lu heaved a sigh, absently rubbing his chest before he dropped his hand to his lap. "I left him. He… did not take it well." He chuckled dryly, fading into another sigh.
"About fuckin' time." John said with a firm nod of approval as Briar tipped her head back with a sigh of relief.
"What?"
"You know how many times I've had to convince Briar not to go kill him?" John somberly asked.
"Too many," Briar bitterly interjected.
"Yeah, 'cause I'd've helped and where would that get us?" John very quietly shot back.
"A world without him," she replied with a smirk in her voice.

Oh Balilan you lovely lesbian whaleshark of a side character you. Too kind, too pure, too late in the story to really shine.

Too in the wrong job... but if more people were like you the world might actually be a safer place~🦈

‘Sorry, I don’t think I got your name.’
‘Dylan,’ I said, suppressing a groan. ‘Dylan Jones.’
‘Ah, nice to meet you Dylan. I’d shake your hand, but…’ She shrugged the shoulder I was on. ‘My name’s Balilan Micris, Chief Enforcer to the Elder Conclave.’
‘You’re really nice for a cop.’
‘A “cop”? I don’t know that word yet, but I think I get what you mean. Would you prefer it if I was rude and brutal and detained you with fear and force?’
‘No, I just… I’m not used to people with your job being, well, nice.’
‘People are weird. You and I both know that I could crush you with my bare hands at any moment. What do either of us gain by me threatening you with that? You’d just get scared and lash out and…’ She raised her free hand to her missing eye. ‘Things would only get worse for the both of us. I’d rather you cooperate because you choose to, because you understand I’m not here to harm you, than because you’re afraid and looking for a chance to strike and escape.’
‘Who says I’m not?’
‘We both also know you can barely stand on your own right now. And you haven’t been fighting me. So I don’t have anything to worry about. Trust goes both ways.’

The lovely Hazine from "Laughter of the Hunted Gods."

She barreled out of the shop like a hound after a rabbit. “You’re not wanted here! Not needed! You absolute fraud!”
She stood a good handspan taller than Quinceberry, and where he was round, she was all angles. Her hair resembled a deep black bramble, her nose a stunted brown parsnip, her teeth sallow eggshell. She wore outsized brown poplin overalls with weathered wooden buttons.
“Mr. Durth,” said Quinceberry, “Allow me to introduce the lovely Hazine.”
The woman pulled up short barely an arm’s length from Quinceberry. “Flattery won’t work this time, Quince.”
Boden took half a step forward, keeping his knees loose and his hands out of his pockets.
“Not flattery,” said Quinceberry. “Factuality.”

Definitely Fender, though him getting hurt drove some of the story. He's a changeling The Guard saved & they're very protective of him.

He grew up in a lab, being experimented on, & he's such a sweetie, I wanna put him in my pocket w Lyric.

“Fae were more likely to share lovers than any kind of special sweets and those were Boone’s favorites.
But when Fender gave the unseelie a questioning look as the candy was brought to his lips, Boone smiled and nodded. “Go ahead. I was planning to give you some anyway, I know you’ve been wanting to try them.”
Fender grinned, letting out an appreciative sound the second his lips closed around the treat. “Mmm, it’s cinnamony. Is that why you always smell so good?”
The unseelie blushed—possibly for the first time ever—and cleared his throat. “Ah…yeah. Something like that. I can get you more if you want.”
“Yes, please.” Fender plucked the candy out of his mouth and held it out to Lyric. “Here, try this.”
Brenna waved her hands and made a sharp, negative sound. “Ew! And don’t do that, pixies have the worst immune systems. I’ll let you get away with a lot since you’re hurt, sweetness, but not that.”

Side characters that I want to include more:

I wanted the Philosopher Queens to meet up with another band and used the opportunity to be a bit... over the top.😎

I give to you, Big Victory - guitarist & living legend of the Midwest indie music scene for the past 30 years.

#SnippetShare #WritingQ

Screenshot of text on a web page with a purple background on either side that includes hearts and music instruments.

AJ still beaming excitedly says, “She is the brains behind our band, songwriter and lead guitar, Katie Moon.”

Big Victory’s eyes go wide and his mouth hangs open in awe. “No shit!”

Katie’s smile is sweetly playful as she says, “Yes, shit. It is a pleasure to finally meet you.”

He drops to one knee and takes one of her hands in his, holding it to his forehead. “Oh blessed muse, guide my guitar to lead audiences to highs of rocking badassery until the Elysian Fields welcome me. Amen!”

Katie’s face turns bright red, as she laughs nervously. She pulls her hand out of his, it looking tiny compared to his mighty paws. “Get up, you big goof! You are embarrassing me.”

AJ says, “Uh, so you know each other or something?”

“I wrote a couple songs for him, that is all.”

Big Victory scoffs. “Wrote a couple? *pfft* So back when I was playing with HellWish and posting some of my own stuff online, I get this email out of nowhere. ‘I love your sound! I wonder if you might like this song.’ Attached was the most fucking amazing, badass, bring-the-house-down-and-burn-its-corpse banger of a hit! Not only was it awesome, but it was me!”

This guy, Taruuq, a warrior of the Duun Jurai fraternity.

He showed up during the tournament in the 3rd act of #GodsOfAtalantis Book 1 without me planning him, & he was the coolest dude. Alas my cast for this series is already too big, so if he comes back it'll just be for a cameo 🥲

“Your technique is quite good,” he told her, “but you must keep your muscles loose. I see you tense up sometimes, and it makes you slower and clumsier than you ought to be.”
He swung at her again. The club missed her and hit the stone floor of the stage with a piercing crack! [Redacted Hunk Lady] slipped around behind him and caught him in a chokehold.
“Thank you, jah,” she said as he gasped and struggled to free himself from her grip. “Perhaps if I make it through this, you might teach me.”
He managed to catch hold of her and flip her over his shoulder, slamming her to the ground. She groaned.
“I’d be happy to,” he panted, grinning. “I’m Taruuq, by the way.”
He struck at her once more. She dodged his club and pushed herself back up, backpedaling to put some distance between them.
“I am [Redacted Hunk Lady],” she said.
“I heard.” He came after her again. “If you live through this day, I’ll recommend you to Duun Jurai.”

#SnippetShare #writing #side-character from the #novel The Murderous Villain Rosco Pitt.
*Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Mr. Banjo Billy...

He was but a shadow, a faint, undulating form, but the man that emerged from behind the wagon was clear and well defined, playing a woeful tune on a beat-up old banjo – strumming and grinning as he looked my way.
He wore the duster and the hat of the Cahill Cattle Company, but unlike most of the others, he wore his hat in a comical way, set firmly yet crooked and sideways on his head. I didn’t know the tune he was playing – just a slow plucking twang of different notes that seemed to tell a sad tale of some unlucky wanderer’s demise.
His dark hair hung matted and messed from beneath his hat, and as his grin broadened with every step of his approach, darkness revealed a mouth with just a few crooked, yellowed tombstones that were what remained of his teeth.
He moved halfway cross the dusty street and came to a stop but continued his plucking and grinning. I stared at him, drawing full on one of Freddy’s finely rolled smokes, until the strumming finally stopped and the grin became a straight line across his face. The man extended one arm, the banjo dangling from his fisted hand, the other hand he placed across his stomach and honored his audience with a deep, theatrical bow. He straightened his posture with an unnecessary flailing of the arms, stringing the banjo over his back.
“Howdy,” he said, his mouth curling again to that grin. “Folks who know me call me Banjo Billy; on accounts of the banjo I carry wherever I go. ‘Spect you might have heard of me.”

I wish i gave more time to both Aaron and Jun-Seo

Aaron
To help Jun-Seo keep his mind off of the little get together, I took him out for a night on the town. He didn’t much care for dancing, thank the Spirits, but I knew he enjoyed a good concert. New Wave had a whole park dedicated for musical acts to play in open air. All they had to do was sign up for a time on the schedule and the stage was theirs for the time they signed for. To keep things interesting, I decided not to check ahead of time who was playing. As we walked towards the park, the sound of strings started being audible. An orchestra under the stars, it’s quite an enchanting combination.
        “I know these,” Jun-Seo said.
“Oh, who are they?” I asked.
        “The Ash Orchestra.”
    “Sounds ominous.”
“No, no; they’re just from the Volcanic Islands... or whoever is here playing at the park is playing the compositions.”
“Do you ever think of going back to visit?” I asked.
“Yes, I do,” he said, “and when I do, I imagine you there with me, Nim-ina.”
He only ever called me Nim-ina– Volcanic Standard for ‘my soul,’ when no one was watching because he knew I got flustered from the sheer joy of being called that.

“I want you to meet my family and the people from my life there.”
    “Y-you never m-mentioned it before,” I stammered.
        “No, I didn’t.”
    “Any reason?” I asked.
“I suppose not a good one,” he said, looking thoughtful.
    “Go on.”
“We’ve been together for about a year and a half now, but back when I considered visiting with you we had only been together a few months, and it would have been a big commitment in time to travel to the Volcanic Islands, and a big money commitment.”
“Two commitments I will happily make,” I expressed.
“I think I stopped thinking about it as much because I became very comfortable here... with you.” He smiled up at me. Oh, my heart.
“Well... uh, as I said, I would love to go back to the Volcanic Islands with you to meet your family and friends.”

I really wish I had more breathing room to give Sister Hannah in book one, and am glad she will get more spotlight moving forward.

Here’s her introduction! She was supposed to be a more “drinking the kool-aid” foil to Mary, but after I wrote this that went out the window.

She was about to ask a question when a squealing figure hurdled past her and caught Mary in a hug. "Sister Mary! Oh Redeemer, be praised! You're here!" Cried out a high pitched, cracking voice.
Mary's face was painted with panic. She struggled to get her arms free but the other girl had them pinned to her sides. Reka jumped in, seizing the newcomer by the collar and hauling her back.
She was the same height as Mary, with a plain face strewn with freckles. A bouncy lock of curly brown hair hung down the center of her forehead, having escaped from her veiled headdress.
"Do-Do I know you?" Mary stammered.
The girl stopped pushing forward and Reka let her go to step next to Mary. On a second look, she was quite a bit younger than both of them, all coltish legs and arms she hadn't quite grown into yet. If Mary was a woman who looked young, this was a girl in truth. "Of course you do! You stayed with us when you went to the Tower City! You sang for us after Father Jonah held service!"
"Stayed with you?" Mary looked around, clearly trying to remember not just this girl but this place. She looked at Reka with pleading eyes.
Reka bent down around Mary to the girl's height. "Sister Mary would have been through these parts a pretty long time ago.
Maybe something more specific will jog her memory?"
The girl's eyes went wide and she began to pout in concentration. It was adorable and Reka had to keep herself from laughing to spare her feelings. After a moment she seized on an idea and pointed at Mary, "Tuli! You played with me and my doll Tuli when you were here last.""Tuli?" Reka didn't think that had helped Mary at all until she put a hand to her mouth in surprise. "Hannah?! Little Hannah, is that you?!"
Hannah squealed in delight and nearly tackled Mary into Reka with her next hug. Mary looked less uncomfortable this time and hugged the girl back, so she didn't feel the need to step in again.
"You remembered! Oh!" Hannah stepped back and swished the skirts of her dress. "It's Sister Hannah now!" Indeed, she was wearing the same style of dress as Mary, though the trim around the sleeves and hem were white and the fabric was less finely tailored.
Mary's smile was brittle, but Reka didn't think Hannah noticed.
"Congratulations!" She took Hannah by the shoulders and reached up to tuck the escaped lock of hair back into her headdress. "Oh my how you've grown."
"I'll be fourteen summers next year!" Hannah said "Father Abraham says I can join the Choir like you when we get to the Holy City."

How about a two for one? A description of the building and the spirit that represents it!

#WritingQ #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompt

He'd wandered in front of the Green Dragon, a tavern set in the center of the park. It vied with several dozen other inns and taverns for the right to being "the oldest drinking hole in the Fifth Ring", but it had certainly been there a long time. For what he thought it worth, it was certainly one of the most beautifully placed.
Dead in the center of the rolling hills of the park, the owners throughout the years had planted all manner of trees and shrubbery, all hung with multicolored light crystals of every size and hue imaginable. It made the humble building, with its dark river stone walls and peaked barrel tile roof, look to be in the middle of some enchanted glade instead of in the middle of the city. Ownership of the tavern had passed from generation to generation for so long it had gained a Local God of its own, their influence then spreading enough to take over the entire park, the name having been changed to Green Dragon Park centuries ago.
That was who approached him now. The Green Dragon had found herself with an interesting confluence of traits. She had begun as a spirit, not a dragon, but since dragons were common enough and people knew enough about them, she had inherited many of their abilities. Like a Dragon she could assume the greater form of one, though now wore the one more like the other Alliance peoples, veridian scales shining off her arms and dotted through the rest of her skin. A slit up one side of the skirt of her low cut serving girl's attire showed off her scaled and clawed feet and calves. From around the back a thin serpentine tail trailed behind her, ending in a sharp point reminiscent of a cask tap. Even her hair was green, spilling over her shoulders in springy emerald curls.
She beckoned Melic over, the warm light of the tavern behind her almost more inviting than she was.

I'm slowly chewing through my WIP, but page 12 is my favorite section so far.

From Flowers & Entomology, my dryads are unfortunately disturbing Whispers' human neighbor with science.

#SnippetShare #WritingCommunity #AmWriting #SFF

Snippet from Flowers and Entomology:

"Sexual cannibalism?" Zinnian made a face. Expressions were a good way to decipher a human's feelings, and this human was uncomfortable.

Whispers said, "The females don't eat the whole male. Just the head."

"Uhhh…" Zinnian almost spilled his cup of tea.
Whispers explained, "We're going to put a collar on the male."

"Kinky," remarked the human.

Kinky was a concept that dryads didn't share with animals. Despite rumors to the contrary, sharing pollen was better for the plants a dryad's seed stone had bonded to. To procreate, Whispers kind actually...

Whispers' inner monologue was interrupted when Sylvia asked Zinnian, "Who made your camera?"

Zinnian frowned, but he found a smile before answering. "I should admit now that I broke up with Olivia. My boss. Well, former boss I suppose. I don't think she'll want me wandering the tunnels now."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Sylvia softly said. "Does anyone else make cameras? A watchmaker perhaps?"

"I'm not sure," Zinnian replied.

Whispers had already gone to the kitchen to grab crackers and bright red jelly. He then scuttled back into the living room and set the treats down. "Eat," Whispers demanded.

Scooping up some jelly, Zinnian had to ask, "Is this prickly pear?"

"Of course not! I won't bear fruit for another sixty days. It's strawberry," Whispers declared. "I'll deliver some next door when they're ripe."

Sylvia happily tried some.

Zinnian sighed and took a bite. After swallowing, he said, "It's a little weird you feed people your body parts."

"I must feed the pears to something! Otherwise, they simply fall off. I can't eat them all."

Something he said unnerved his human guest again. At least Sylvia was happily munching away at crackers.

Little delayed!

Sid wants to ask where his little brother's been the past two days and specifically *who* he's been with (he's worried Lu's doing something stupid) but gets side-tracked for a bit by a book Lu found.

#Snippetshare #VeilOfStarlight

Lu set the book aside with a grin, rushing to open his door before Sid even knocked. A little startled, Sid looked down at him.

His older brother's expression fell to disappointed resignation as he took in Lu's unhidden excitement.

"What's that face for?" Lu asked, stepping back to let Sid in.

"I could ask you the same," Sid countered with a sigh after Lu shut his door.

Lu frowned at him, hand still on the door knob as he listened for Stella. Satisfied she wasn't returning, he gestured for Sid to sit on the bed. He excitedly pulled the massive book onto his lap, he turned to tell Sid about what Sorrel had found and stopped-short when he saw his brother's expectant look.

"What?"

"Where have you been?" Sid seriously, quietly asked. "And don't fucking lie to me."

"I won't," he replied simply, looking down at the book and opening to the title page. "Have you seen this before?" He asked.

"Lu," Sid shut his eyes, massaging the space between them with his fingers. "I could not care less about some stu–" he looked down, instantly shutting-up the moment he realized what he was looking at.
"Wh–? What the fuck is that?!" Sid asked in an astonished whisper, sliding closer to Lu.

Pleased he'd successfully avoided that conversation with his brother, Lu slowly turned through the uncomfortably soft pages, biting back a smug smirk. "It's 'Generals and Specifics of Calor: Its People, Environment, and History'." Lu proudly told him. "It's about two hundred years old, but–!"

Lu excitedly turned to the section he'd read with Sorrel. "Look," he pointed to the details about biology and magic. Specifically, how they could avoid burning others.

"Wh-? We can what?" Sid reached for the book and then grunted in surprise at its weight. They both chuckled as he sat it on his lap and he began to curiously read it over. "No way…" he quietly said under his breath.
