A lot of effort in, not much career out. Researchers described protected writing time that was agreed and then withdrawn, conference trips they had to justify again and again, and their own publications put on hold until project work was finished.

When things go wrong between researchers and PIs, it's rarely just one issue. Workload and project management came up most often, followed closely by communication and feedback. Pay, career support and contract security weren't far behind.

But one in four has had difficulties. For most, that meant uncomfortable situations rather than open conflict.
