Title: Autumn in Funatsu (1953)

Artist: Hasui Kawase

www.gov-online.go.jp/eng/publicit... #ShinHanga #Art #HasuiKawase #NoAi #Showa #MtFuji #MountFuji #Autumn #Funatsu #Japan

Early morning on a farm near Mount Fuji. In the foreground, chickens peck the ground along a curving path separating the farmhouse from cultivated fields. In the shadows by the woodpile, a female figure wearing an apron and a scarf on their head works at some unseen task; nearby, a tree is turning yellow, orange and red with the season. Beyond, low forested hills underline a snow-capped Mount Fuji; above, the few clouds crossing the blue sky are tinted yellow by the early morning light.

Artist: Hasui Kawase

A rainy day by the gates of Okayama Castle. The courtyard is contained by the heavy stone foundations of the castle; above, the castle walls of the upper levels are clean white plaster. On our right, two female figures in kimono hold umbrellas over their heads as they approach the gate; up ahead, a third figure stands by the gate, wearing a yellow poncho. The courtyard is slick with rain, while overhead, the sky is gloomy and overcast.

Title: Nara Park (1953)

Artist: Hasui Kawase

www.visitnara.jp/destinations... #ShinHanga #Art #NoAi #Showa #HasuiKawase #Autumn #Deer #SikaDeer #Nara #Japan

A misty morning in Nara Park. A pair of Sika deer pause under tall trees: one of the deer looks toward the viewer, while the second inspects one of the many large puddles on the irregular ground. A third deer stands a litte way off in the background, partially obscured by mist. Beyond, the mist reduces a line of trees to hazy silhouettes; above, the sky is overcast and soft with diffused light. The branches of a Japanese maple tree, its leaves an intense red, screen the top of the image.

The warm light of an autumn sunset is filtered through tall stalks of corn. The sunlight fills the image with gold and orange, while the plants standing in the foreground are rendered as green-tinted silhouettes.

“ダンサー(レヴュー)” (Dancer [Revue]) by Kobayakawa Kiyoshi 小早川清 (Japanese) – Color woodblock print / 1932 – Chiba City Museum of Art (Chiba, Japan) #WomenInArt #KobayakawaKiyoshi #小早川清 #ChibaCityMuseumofArt #千葉市美術 #art #artText #arte #ShinHanga #ArtDeco #JapaneseArt #1930sArt #新版画 #JapaneseArtist #DanceArt

Japanese artist Kobayakawa Kiyoshi (小早川清) created “Dancer (Revue)” in 1932, during the early Shōwa period, when Tokyo’s nightlife and entertainment culture were being transformed by modern theaters, cafés, cinemas, jazz, and Western-influenced fashion. Kobayakawa was born in Hakata, Fukuoka, in 1899 and worked in both painting and printmaking, becoming particularly known for images of women. This print belongs to the world of shin-hanga (新版画), or “new prints,” a movement that renewed traditional Japanese woodblock printing while embracing modern subjects and contemporary visual styles.

A woman bends backward in an extraordinary arc, her body sweeping diagonally across a nearly black field. One arm stretches upward, the other reaches outward, while her face disappears beneath the curve of her body and the small patterned cap on her head. Her pale dress seems to move with her as loose fabric drops from the waist and flares between her legs, scattered with circles and spots of red, blue, gray, and orange. Dark red shoes punctuate the bottom of the composition. Against the dark background, her exposed arms and legs appear almost luminous, turning the dancer’s body into a bold, rhythmic shape.

The dancer is not posed as a conventional bijinga (美人画), or “picture of a beautiful woman.” Instead, Kobayakawa emphasizes motion, physical confidence, and the spectacle of performance. Her face is almost irrelevant. It is the body in motion that commands our attention while the black backdrop isolates her like a flash of movement caught under a spotlight with an unmistakably Art Deco vibe.

Kobayakawa’s revue dancer was from the “new Tokyo” that emerged after reconstruction from the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake and an example of how Japanese shin-hanga artists incorporated contemporary society, entertainment, customs, and everyday life into the woodblock tradition. The result is a modern woman occupying the stage with athleticism, fashion, and uninhibited movement.

Artist: Hasui Kawase

www.asahi.com/ajw/articles... #ShinHanga #Art #HasuiKawase #NoAi #Showa #Autumn #MountFuji #MtFuji #Fuji #Rice #RiceHarvest #Japan

An autumn day on a farm in Japan. In the foreground, a lone farm worker stoops to tend to a field of golden rice. Just beyond, a group of farmhouses stands amongst tall trees; further on, low tree-covered mountains cross the horizon. In the distance, the snow-capped Mount Fuji rises into a hazy sky.
