Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! We are proud to announce that in collaboration with our brilliant volunteers, we are releasing a fascinating series of spooky informational graphics focused on Creatures of the Deep. Today’s graphic focuses on the glorious Giant Isopod!

Giant Isopods are one of the freakiest-looking creatures in the ocean. Believe it or not, they are actually related to the pill bugs we all find in our gardens! Similar to the oarfish and giant squids, the giant isopods are evidence of deep-sea gigantism. They use their hard exoskeleton to defend against predators such as sharks. Notice those massive eyes? They are used to traverse the deep oceans and locate food. If you ever go on to the Deep Sea Nautilus Project, you can see these monsters feeding on dead sea life.

These amazing creatures also utilize chemistry to sense for prey and get around. Their long antennae are perfect for this task. They can reach almost twenty inches in length! These giant isopods have seven pairs of legs. These fourteen legs help them dig into the sea floor to avoid predators. One of the most shocking facts is that these isopods can go years without eating. Imagine if a human had that superpower! This makes them one of the most resilient creatures in the ocean. And also one of the most frightening!

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! Recently, we published a fascinating article on poaching & trafficking of marine life in the waters of California, courtesy of science writer Orsolya Dunai! In this month’s installment of The Pacific Tide, we expose the dark world of wildlife trafficking and poaching rings with marine and aquatic animals being highly coveted; citing examples of a 500-sea specimen trafficking bust, multiple episodes of abalone poaching, and illegal clamming among others. Learn how this unlawful activity damages the California coastal oceanic ecosystems, causes disease, endangers food web resilience, harms fisheries/ocean farming, undermines marine conservation efforts, and injuriously traumatizes the laundered specimens.

We also explore how the state of California is combating wildlife trafficking and poaching with the founding of a statewide confiscations resource network, laws enacted to protect both wild and sea life, and how the general public can get involved to help report trafficking and poaching.
