Zao Wou-Ki’s After the Eclipse (11 August 99) evokes a mysterious transition from darkness to light. The painting feels less like a literal depiction of an eclipse than an atmospheric experience of light slowly emerging from shadow. The upper portion is dominated by deep navy and midnight blue, creating a sense of vastness, depth and uncertainty. These dark tones seem to press down over the composition, while the irregular, almost black forms along the left and right edges suggest a shadowed enclosure. They give the painting a sense of being suspended between an inner world and an immense space beyond. At the centre, the blue gradually softens into lavender, pale violet and luminous yellow-white. This radiant area appears to glow from within the darkness, as if sunlight were returning after the eclipse. The light is diffuse rather than sharply defined, making it feel fragile, elusive and almost otherworldly. Fine, scratch-like marks and textured brushstrokes interrupt the smooth fields of colour, introducing a sense of turbulence and movement. The composition draws the eye towards the bright centre and lower right, where the colours become lighter and more open. This creates a powerful contrast between concealment and revelation, heaviness and release. The darker borders seem to contain the light, yet the light gradually pushes against them.

Visual description The painting can be approached as an abstract landscape rather than a literal scene. Chu Teh-Chun's mature style is characterized by layers of colour, energetic brushwork and luminous passages that suggest natural phenomena without depicting them precisely. His compositions often evoke mist, sky, distant mountains or light filtering through clouds. Meaning and interpretation The title is especially evocative. A voile — a veil — both conceals and softens what lies behind it. The painting can therefore suggest several ideas: Mystery: reality is never fully accessible; we perceive it through layers of memory, emotion and imagination. The fleeting nature of perception: forms seem to emerge and dissolve, as if the scene were changing before our eyes. The boundary between the visible and invisible: abstraction allows the artist to express sensations that a literal landscape might not capture.
