During WWII in the early hours of 14 Oct 1939, the German submarine U-47 entered Scapa Flow & struck the HMS Royal Oak with torpedoes while it was anchored near Holm shore. 835 of the 1259 sailors onboard died. A memorial service is held at its wreck site each year.
